Die Kunsthalle Fridericianum präsentiert ab dem 25. Juni
mit Produced by Migros eine erstrangige Auswahl bedeutsamer
Werke aus der Sammlung des migros museum für gegenwartskunst
Zürich und setzt damit gleichzeitig die eigenen Ausstellungen
der letzten Jahre in einen breiteren Kontext. Parallel zeigt
Gardar Eide Einarsson seine große Einzelausstellung Power
Has a Fragrance mit zahlreichen Werken, die - angesiedelt
zwischen Minimal- und Konzeptkunst - als Abbilder von kulturellen
Zeichen und Symbolen verschiedenster Gesellschaften darauf deuten,
wie die Welt vermittelt wird.

Mit großen Namen wie Maurizio Cattelan, Christoph Büchel,
Cady Noland, Urs Fischer, Douglas Gordon, Olaf Nicolai, Rirkrit
Tiravanija, Christine Borland, Gustav Metzger und Christopher
Wool wartet die Sammlung auf, die mit Mitteln des sogenannten
Migros-Kulturprozent des Schweizer Handelsriesen Migros zusammengetragen
wurde.
Raumgroße Installationen, die teils unmittelbar aus Ausstellungen
stammen, welche die beiden ersten Direktoren Rein Wolfs und Heike
Munder kuratierten, werden in der Kunsthalle Fridericianum durch
eindrucksvolle Skulpturen, Filme, Malerei und Fotografie ergänzt.
Im Zentrum stehen dabei sowohl Fragen nach gesellschaftspolitischer
Relevanz als auch Aspekte wie Performativität und Raumbezug.
Referenzen zu Kassel ergeben sich nicht zuletzt durch Joseph
Beuys, der - vermittelt durch Maurizio Cattelan - für eine
Weile ins Fridericianum zurückzukehren scheint.

In seiner Einzelausstellung Power Has a Fragrance entwirft
Gardar Eide Einarsson ein Szenario, das soziale Konflikte zwischen
Individuen und der Gesellschaft, in der sie leben, illustriert.
Er richtet den Fokus im Speziellen auf Autorität und Entfremdung,
in deren Kontext ebenso Gefühle der Angst und Paranoia eingebettet
sind. Gemälde und eine Vielzahl großformatiger Grafiken
und Drucke stehen in Korrespondenz mit Skulpturen, Leuchtkästen
und Neonschriften sowie geräumigen Installationen. Die große
Zahl an Werken in der Ausstellung ist ausdrücklich als Einheit
konzipiert, so dass das Gewicht von den einzelnen Arbeiten auf
deren Zusammenspiel gelenkt wird. Einarsson hinterfragt grundlegende
Strukturen sozialer Konflikte in modernen Gesellschaften anhand
der Wechselwirkung von Autorität und Rebellion. In den Fokus
rücken hierbei Äußerungsformen von Macht, Kontrolle
und Unterdrückung, Methoden und Manifestationen von Sub-
und Gegenkulturen, aber auch individuelle Personen, die als Diktatoren,
Terroristen oder Massenmörder internationale Bekanntheit
erlangten.

Im Kontext der Ausstellung Produced by Migros wird am
Mittwoch 6. Juli um 18 Uhr eine Diskussion mit Olaf Nicolai,
Dr. Mario Kramer (Sammlungsleiter MMK, Frankfurt) und Rein Wolfs
stattfinden. Sitzend auf Nicolais Installation Landschaft,
metaphysisch und konkret (nach Max Bill) wird sowohl über
"public, corporate & private Collecting" als auch
über die Kunst von Max Bill und über den "State
of the Art" gesprochen.

Nothing is Perfect
Das Aktionsobjekt Nothing is Perfect ein hölzerner
Zeigestock von San Keller, der auf den perfektionistischen Modeschöpfer
Dior zurückgeht ist Bestandteil der Ausstellung
Produced by Migros und wird an zwei Abenden während
der Laufzeit performativ zum Leben erweckt. Am Mittwoch 31. August
um 18 Uhr gibt San Keller selbst eine solche Führung, die
sich den Mängeln an Ausstellungsobjekten widmet, und am
7. September führt der Kunstkritiker und Journalist Dirk
Schwarze unter dem titelgebenden Motto durch die Ausstellung.
On-Curating
Die aktuelle Ausgabe des Online-Magazins On-Curating ist
erschienen. Sie dokumentiert einen großen Teil des Symposiums
"Institution as Medium. Curating as Institutional Critique?",
das im März 2009 in Kassel stattfand und gemeinsam von der
Kunsthalle Fridericianum und dem Postgraduate Program in Curating
der ZHdK Zürich veranstaltet wurde. Das zweitägige
Symposium behandelte die Möglichkeiten, Chancen, aber auch
Grenzen des kritischen Kuratierens. Zu Gast waren namhafte Vertreter/innen
aus Theorie und Praxis des Ausstellungsbetriebs, darunter etwa
Maria Lind, Oliver Marchart und Søren Grammel, deren Beiträge
nun im aktuellen Issue 8 und einer der kommenden Ausgaben
von On-Curating dokumentiert werden und unter www.on-curating.org

Starting on 25 June 2011, Kunsthalle Fridericianum presents
with Produced by Migros a first-rate selection of important
works from the collection of the migros museum für gegenwartskunst
Zürich and is thereby placing its own exhibitions of recent
years in a broader context. At the same time Gardar Eide Einarsson
shows his large exhibition Power Has a Fragrance including
a number of works allocated between Minimal and Concept Art,
which are operating with images referring to cultural signs and
symbols and thus dealing with an idea of how the world is mediated.

Major works by artists such as Maurizio Cattelan, Christoph Büchel,
Cady Noland, Urs Fischer, Douglas Gordon, Olaf Nicolai, Rirkrit
Tiravanija, Christine Borland, Gustav Metzger and Christopher
Wool are included in the collection of the migros museum für
gegenwartskunst in Zurich. The works were brought together through
funding from the so-called Culture Percentage of the Swiss retail
giant Migros. Room-sized installations, some of which come directly
from exhibitions curated by the first two directors of the Migros
collection, Rein Wolfs and Heike Munder, are supplemented by
selected sculptures, films, paintings and photographs. At the
centre of the show are issues of sociopolitical relevance and
aspects such as performativity and spatiality. There are references
to Kassel in the show, especially with Maurizio Cattelan's sculptural
reminiscence of Joseph Beuys: it seems as though the artist has
decided to return to the Fridericianum for a while.

In his solo exhibition Power Has a Fragrance, Gardar Eide
Einarsson creates a scenario that illustrates social conflicts
between individuals and the societies in which they live and
that focuses on authority and alienation, in whose context feelings
of fear and paranoia are embedded. Paintings and a number of
graphic works and prints interact with sculptures, lightboxes
and neon writing, as well as spacious installations. The large
number of works in the installation is expressly conceived as
a unit, so that the focus is not on the individual works but
on the interplay between them. With his art Gardar Eide Einarsson
examines fundamental structures of social conflicts in modern
societies based on the interplay between authority and rebellion.
He focuses on expressions of power, on control and suppression,
on methods and manifestations of sub- and countercultures, as
well as on individual people who gained international renown
as dictators, terrorists or mass murderers.

In the context of the exhibition Produced by Migros, there
will be a discussion between Olaf Nicolai, Dr. Mario Kramer (director
of the MMK Collection, Frankfurt) and Rein Wolfs on Wednesday
6 July at 6 p.m. Sitting on Nicolai's installation Landschaft,
metaphysisch und konkret (nach Max Bill) the participants
will discuss public, corporate and private collecting, Max Bill's
art and "the state of the art".

Nothing is Perfect
The performative object Nothing is Perfect a wooden
pointer by San Keller which refers back to the perfectionist
couturier Christian Dior is part of the exhibition Produced
by Migros and will be brought to life on two evenings in
performances accompanying the exhibition. On Wednesday 31 August
at 6 p.m., San Keller will guide such a tour, devoted to imperfections
of the exhibits, and on 7 September the journalist and art critic
Dirk Schwarze will guide visitors through the exhibition, also
in keeping with the motto Nothing is Perfect.
On-Curating
The new issue of the online magazine On-Curating is now
available and documents a large part of the symposium Institution
as Medium. Curating as Institutional Critique? which was
held in Kassel in March 2009 and co-organized by Kunsthalle Fridericianum
and the Postgraduate Program in Curating, Institute for Cultural
Studies in the Arts, Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). The
two-day symposium dealt with the possibilities, opportunities,
as well as the limitations of critical curating. The guests included
renowned exhibition theorists and practitioners such as Maria
Lind, Oliver Marchart and Søren Grammel. Their contributions
are documented in the current issue no.8 and one of the following
issues of On-Curating and can be read free of charge at

Pink Wave Hunter geht nach Venedig
Die neue Skulpturenserie Pink Wave Hunter von Andro Wekua,
die in seiner aktuellen Ausstellung in der Kunsthalle Fridericianum
erstmalig zu sehen ist, wird bereits vor Ende der Ausstellungslaufzeit
Kassel verlassen, um auf der 54. Venedig Biennale präsentiert
zu werden. Die 15 Skulpturen Architekturmodelle stark zerstörter
und verlassener Gebäude, die an die Heimatstadt des georgischstämmigen
Künstlers erinnern werden Teil der von Biennale-Leiterin
Bice Curiger kuratierten Ausstellung ILLUMInazioni ILLUMInations
sein. "Wir freuen uns sehr, diese Arbeiten von Andro
Wekua auf die Reise nach Venedig zu schicken und den Skulpturen
damit höchste internationale Aufmerksamkeit zu garantieren",
bekräftigt Rein Wolfs. In Kassel sind die Werke noch bis
zum 22. .05. - zu sehen, danach wird die Ausstellung dem Publikum
bis zum 5.06.in veränderter Form zugänglich sein.

InsideOut Performance "The Light &
The Rock"
A free-form lecture by Nina Canell, Robin Watkins & Friends
Am Freitag 13. .05. - um 21 Uhr wird Nina Canell mit Robin Watkins
& Friends die "free-form lecture" The Light
& The Rock in der Kunsthalle Fridericianum realisieren.
An der experimentellen Performance werden als Gäste Pádraic
E. Moore, Ana-Maria Hadji Culea, Dieter Roelstraete und Rein
Wolfs teilnehmen. Außerdem wird Nina Canell ihre neu veröffentlichte
Vinyl-LP präsentieren, die im Zusammenhang mit ihrer aktuellen
Ausstellung Ode to Outer Ends produziert wurde. In Anlehnung
an die letzte Passage von Gustav Holsts Musikstück Neptun,
der Mystiker (1916), in dem der Komponist das vermutlich
erste bewusste "Fade-Out" einsetzte, hat Canell eine
Türpassage zwischen zwei Ausstellungsräumen der Kunsthalle
Fridericianum installiert. Die Partitur ist auf Canells LP, wie
auch bei der Ursprungsversion Holsts, durch einen Frauenchor
intoniert, bei dem das "Fade-Out" mechanisch durch
das langsame Schließen einer Tür hergestellt wird.
Die transparente 10-Inch-Vinylschallplatte ist als Edition von
100 Stück aufgelegt und am Abend des 13. .05. - exklusiv
für 15 ¤ (Normalpreis 25 ¤) erhältlich.
Die Ausstellungen sind den ganzen Abend geöffnet. Beginn

InsideOut Late Night
Mit InsideOut Late Night erwartet die Besucher/innen der
Kunsthalle Fridericianum am Freitag 27. .05. - ab 21 Uhr ein
fulminanter Abend: Die Choreografische Werkstatt des Staatstheaters
Kassel verlässt die Theaterbühne und zeigt zeitgenössischen
Tanz im Ausstellungsraum für Gegenwartskunst. Gleichzeitig
präsentiert die Kunstvermittlung der Kunsthalle Fridericianum
gemeinsam mit der Herderschule Kassel das Projekt untitled
(magazin) 2011 mit Kritiken, Fotodokumentationen und kreativen
Beiträgen von Schüler/innen zu den Ausstellungen von
Teresa Margolles, Andro Wekua und Nina Canell. Abgerundet wird
der Abend mit Kurzfilmen der Trickfilmklasse der Kunsthochschule
Kassel und Musik von Basti & Zoka (A.R.M.) im Bar- und Loungebereich.
Die Ausstellungen sind den ganzen Abend geöffnet.

Tanztheater: Choreografische Werkstatt
Am 3.06.ist die Choreografische Werkstatt erneut zu Gast
in der Kunsthalle Fridericianum. Tänzer/innen des Tanztheaterensembles
am Staatstheater Kassel präsentieren eigene Performances,
die entsprechend der unterschiedlichen kulturellen Gesellschaften
und Tanztraditionen verschiedenste Befindlichkeiten, Zustände,
Gedanken und Emotionen transportieren. Der künstlerische
Prozess lässt sich davon losgelöst nicht denken, ist
der Tanz doch mehr als reine Bewegung und ästhetisch stilisierter
Ausdruck. Sie sind herzlich eingeladen, diese tänzerische
Reise zu begleiten!
Beginn 21 Uhr, Eintritt 5 ¤/gratis mit Jahreskarte*
* die Jahreskarte der Kunsthalle Fridericianum ist ab sofort
vergünstigt erhältlich: 15 ¤ (statt 25 ¤),
ermässigt 10 ¤ (statt 15 ¤). Sie ist bis zum
31.12.2011 gültig und berechtigt zum freien Eintritt in
die Ausstellungen und zu allen Veranstaltungen der Kunsthalle
Fridericianum.
Neue Publikationen
Mit ihrer Ausstellung Frontera in der Kunsthalle Fridericianum
sorgte Teresa Margolles noch bis vor kurzem für viel Aufsehen.
Ihre Werke, die mit drastischen Mitteln die beängstigenden
Ausmaße des mexikanischen Drogenkriegs reflektieren, sind
gleichzeitig von minimalistischer Ästhetik und emotionaler
Tiefe gekennzeichnet. Der Katalog, der die Kasseler Ausstellung
dokumentiert, wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Museion in Bozen
produziert, wo die Ausstellung in veränderter Form vom 27.
.05. - bis 21. August 2011 gezeigt wird. Er erscheint am 27.
.05. - und ist für 27,50 ¤ (Buchhandelspreis 32 ¤)
in der Kunsthalle Fridericianum erhältlich.
Seit Februar 2011 läuft eine intensive Kooperation mit
einem Kunstkurs (12. Klasse) der Herderschule Kassel, die sich
zeitgenössischer Kunst, ihrer Entstehung und Vermittlung
widmet. Die Jugendlichen entwickeln künstlerische, kritische
und dokumentarische Zugänge zur Kunst, führen Interviews,
recherchieren Hintergründe, entwickeln performative Formate
und dokumentieren die Ergebnisse in einer Kunstzeitschrift von
Jugendlichen für Jugendliche mit dem Titel untitled (magazin)
2011. Das kostenlose Heft wird von den Schüler/innen
im Rahmen der Veranstaltung InsideOut Late Night am 27.
.05. - 2011 dem Publikum präsentiert.

mit und der Kommentierung von zeitgenössischer Kunst. Das
Sprechen und Handeln vor der Kunst, der Dialog mit den Besucher/innen
und die Irritation sind zentrale Momente dieser Versuche. Im
Juni 2011 erscheint eine Dokumentation der Performances vom 29.
Oktober 2010, die sich der Ausstellung BOTH ENDS von Monica
Bonvicini und den sie begleitenden Themen Raum, Geschlecht und
Architektur widmete. Die Publikation ist eine Zusammenarbeit
mit der Künstler/innen- und Vermittlungsgruppe a7.außeneinsatz
und wird als kostenlose Broschüre in der Kunsthalle
Fridericianum erhältlich sein.

Pink Wave Hunter goes to Venice
The new sculpture series Pink Wave Hunter, which Andro
Wekua is presenting for the first time in his current exhibition
at Kunsthalle Fridericianum, will leave Kassel before the exhibition
ends to be shown at the 54th Venice Biennale. The 15 sculptures
architectural models of heavily destroyed and abandoned
buildings recalling the Georgian-born artist's home city
will be part of the exhibition ILLUMInazioni ILLUMInations
curated by the director of the Biennale, Bice Curiger. "We
are very happy to send these works by Andro Wekua to Venice,
guaranteeing that the sculptures will receive the greatest international
attention," says Rein Wolfs. The works will be on view in
Kassel until May 22. Subsequently, the exhibition will be accessible
to the public in an altered form until it ends on June 5.

InsideOut Performance "The Light &
The Rock"
A free-form lecture by Nina Canell, Robin Watkins & Friends
On Friday, 13 May at 9 p.m., Nina Canell and Robin Watkins &
Friends will realize the "free-form lecture" The
Light & The Rock at Kunsthalle Fridericianum. As guests,
Pádraic E. Moore, Ana-Maria Hadji Culea, Dieter Roelstraete
and Rein Wolfs will take part in the experimental performance.
In addition, Nina Canell will present her newly published vinyl
LP produced in conjunction with her current exhibition Ode
to Outer Ends. Alluding to the final passage of Gustav Holst's
musical piece Neptune, the Mystic (1916), in which the
composer used what may be the first conscious "fade-out",
Canell installed a passageway with doors between two exhibition
rooms of the Kunsthalle Fridericianum. On Canell's LP, as in
Holst's original version, the score is intoned by a women's choir,
with the "fade-out" produced mechanically by slowly
closing doors. The transparent ten-inch vinyl record has been
issued in an edition of 100 and will be available on the evening
of 13 May for a price of ¤ 15 (the normal price is ¤
25). The exhibitions are open the entire evening.

InsideOut Late Night
With InsideOut Late Night, visitors to Kunsthalle
Fridericianum can expect a brilliant evening on 27 May starting
at 9 pm. The Choreographic Workshop ensemble of the Staatstheater
Kassel leaves the theatre stage to perform contemporary dance
in an exhibition room for contemporary art. At the same time
the Kunsthalle Fridericianum's art education programme and the
Herderschule Kassel are presenting the project untitled (magazin)
2011 with critiques, photo documentation and creative contributions
by students to the exhibitions of Teresa Margolles, Andro Wekua
und Nina Canell. The evening will be rounded off by short films
from the cartoon class of Kunsthochschule Kassel and music by
Basti & Zoka (A.R.M.) in the bar and lounge area. The exhibitions
are open the entire evening.

Dance theatre: Choreografische Werkstatt
On 3 June, the Choreografische Werkstatt (Choreographic
Workshop) will again give a guest performance at Kunsthalle Fridericianum.
Dancers from the dance theatre ensemble of the Staatstheater
Kassel will present their own performances conveying different
sensitivities, states, ideas and emotions corresponding to different
cultures and dance traditions. The artistic process cannot be
imagined as separate from these aspects, as dance is more than
just movement and aesthetically stylized expression. You are
cordially invited to accompany this dance journey.

New Publications
Teresa Margolles drew a lot of attention in Kassel until recently
with her exhibition Frontera at Kunsthalle Fridericianum.
Her works, which with drastic means reflect the frightening extent
of the Mexican drug war, are at the same time characterized by
a minimalist aesthetic and emotional depth. The catalogue documenting
the Kassel exhibition was produced in cooperation with the Museion
in Bolzano, where the exhibition is on view in an altered form
from 27 May to 21 August 2011. The catalogue will appear on 27
May and be available for ¤ 27.50 at the Kunsthalle Fridericianum
(the normal price is ¤ 32).
In February 2011, Kunsthalle Fridericianum launched an intense
cooperation with the art class (12th grade) of the Herderschule
Kassel devoted to contemporary art, its origins, and contemporary
art education. The young people develop artistic, critical and
documentary forms of access to art, conduct interviews, research
backgrounds, develop performative formats and document the results
in an art magazine produced by youth for youth entitled untitled
(magazin) 2011. The students will present the free magazine
to the public during InsideOut Late Night on 27 May 2011.
The next edition of the online magazine On-Curating,
which will appear in May 2011, will document a large part of
the symposium Institution as Medium. Curating as Institutional
Critique? which was held in Kassel in March 2009 and co-organized
by Kunsthalle Fridericianum and the Postgraduate Program in Curating,
Institute for Cultural Studies in the Arts, Zurich University
of the Arts (ZHdK). The two-day symposium dealt with the possibilities,
opportunities, as well as the limitations of critical curating.
The guests included renowned exhibition theorists and practitioners.
Their contributions will be documented in the next two issues
of On-Curating and can be read free of charge at www.on-curating.org.
At irregular intervals, the art education department of Kunsthalle
Fridericianum tries out new and experimental formats that deal
with and comment on contemporary art under the title "Performative
Interventions". Central aspects of these experiments include
talks and actions in front of art, dialogue with visitors, and
irritation. In June 2011, a documentation of the performances
of 29 October 2010 will appear, performances which were devoted
to Monica Bonvicini's BOTH ENDS and the accompanying themes
of space, gender, and architecture. The publication is a collaboration
with the artists and art education group a7.außeneinsatz
and will be available as a free brochure at the Kunsthalle
Fridericianum.
