mies van der rohe haus
the film director georgio von der rohe writes of her first visit to the mies van der rohe house on 12th may 1994:
when my father's building works were being created in berlin in the 1930s, we daughters were, so to speak, not involved. it is not until today, over 60 years later - on a beautiful may day that i am able for the first time to visit this house which my father built.
in the mid sixties, as the new national gallery was built, my father tried in vain to seek out his earlier works in the eastern part of the city. perhaps the refusal of the authorities saved him the disappointment of seeing the serious structural changes to the house. the architectonic substance of the house and view out to the thriving garden area conspire to make this first encounter a very special and personal experience: have to think of how my father, who never owned a house of his own, wished in the last years of his life to live in such a residence, in a house which - like many of his private buildings - joins inside with outside and would have allowed him to move freely in his wheelchair, under the linden tree alongside the bank of the obersee.about mies van der rohe haus
