Video Of The Month 1:

Prilla Tania

Mangga Tetangga (Neighbor´s Mango)

Gruppenbild and Video Of The Month are two new series launched by n.b.k. in 2010 to showcase young international artists.

Gruppenbild
1: Karolin Meunier Timing and Consistency (n.b.k. Showroom)
February 16 March 26, 2010

An exhibiton series with: Karolin Meunier, Discoteca Flaming Star, Azin Feizabadi, Ming Wong, Shirin Homann-Saadat

In this video work, produced specially for the n.b.k. exhibition, Meunier used the recording room in a radio studio as the backdrop against which to perform two texts. One scene, shot through a pane of glass, shows a series of answers being recited, whilst the speech delivered straight into the camera has a formal structure reminiscent of a call to action or a guideline. Here, both answers and instructions reference daily, yet undefined situations of conversation or interrogation. Stripped of any narrative context, the text passages refer to the possibilities and limitations of the public pronouncements people make about themselves, and the ambivalent intentions of such assertions.
Making restrained use of the camera, performance and the position of the viewers, Meunier picks up on the working methods deployed in earlier conceptual video and performance art. In the process however, she creates a sense of distance vis-à-vis her own position in the role of narrator or presenter.

Video Of The Month
1: Prilla Tania
Mangga Tetangga (Neighbor´s Mango)
February 16 March 26, 2010

The Artist Prilla Tania from Indonesia (*1979) is showing Mangga Tetangga (Neighbor´s Mango). The medium video plays an important role of social critique as the art scene evolves against the backdrop of the more democratic conditions in Indonesia since 2004. Video pioneer Krisna Murti and artists' initiatives like Rumah Seni Cemeti and
Mes 56 number among the key players in the country. In 2007 the runaway success of Indonesian contemporary art at the Borobodur Auction in Singapore marked an important turning point in the region. On the Indonesian art market video artists now compete with artists painting figurative works.
In her videos Prilla Tania uses stop motion, a type of anima¬tion based on minimal changes in motifs from frame to frame. Tania uses stop motion since she took part in an exhibition in the project space S 14 in Bandung, where she worked with a drawing sketched on a wall. Alluding to the private atmosphere of the project space, Tania created a kitchen scene, adjusting the scale to human dimensions. The mural becomes a backdrop to her stop-motion animated interactions within the kitchen, in which she becomes an active player and communicates with various objects set in motion. Ever since she has developed five video works using stop motion. One of them, Mangga Tetangga (2009, 1:20 min), focuses on the phenomenon of territory and borders, evoked by a chalk drawing of a barbed-wire fence, which is overgrown with mango trees. The symbolic appropriation of a mango becomes a springboard for reflections on human relations defined by ownership and on the power exercised through property.
