The Hybrid as Interface
Popularized historical events are frozen and endure in time for
a collective gaze by the Monument. The everyday, on the other
hand refuses an enduring expression, residing in a muddled zone
of fleeting instants of co-presence. The tension between the
everyday and the monument is captured in the hybrid terrain described
by The Momental, of standing out only to disappear, all the while
making itself felt. The interfacing of this highly subjectivized
temporal interval (the moment) and its' occasional perception
as a phenomenological, albeit fleeting, 'monument' of sorts,
questions the notion of time itself, shifting our mundane experience
of mechanical time into a an unmeasurable realm, where duration
is malleable.
The diverse collection of works and events operate as experiments
in dis-alienation. They seek to instigate responsive situations
for their receivers by giving voice to silent codes of common
behaviour. From an anonymous delivery of flowers, to the audibility
of a stranger - the works dwell in the infra-ordinary, yet subtly
twist its numbed course, skewing the habitual beyond habit. As
gestures of encounter, the works collectively seek to re-write
co-habitative rituals from the inside - the lived. The works
deliberately stall the ethics of circulation, preferring rather
to delicately obstruct the negligent flow of efficiency, opening
up a space where other narratives can find a temporary abode.
The Momental confronts the colonization of everyday routines,
through de-rational modes of production, analysis and discourse.
Like the indeterminacy of the moment itself, these forms of knowing
reside in the interstices between the proverbial map and the
territory, between the read and the spoken. This alternative
grammar of the everyday percolates through our coherent surroundings,
producing novel choreographies of the quotidian - where lived
time re-enters the stage and reveals the poetic potentiality
of the theatre of the trivial.

Hybrid als Interface
Bedeutende historische Ereignisse werden durch Monumente eingefroren
und in der Zeit transportiert. Sie fordern die Aufmerksamkeit
der Passanten im öffentlichen Raum und kollektivieren deren
Wahrnehmung. Momente hingegen sind flüchtige Augenblicke
die individuell empfunden werden. Der kurze Augenblick des Stillstands
im Moment öffnet in uns ein "Fenster" auf unsere
individuell empfundene Zeit - in diesem Moment verliert die physikalische
Zeit ihre Macht.
Im Gegensatz zur linearen, physikalisch gemessenen Zeit, prägt
der Augenblick des Moments unser alltägliches Empfinden:
Monument und Moment haben wenig gemein. Monumente auf öffentlichen
Plätzen beschreiben keine Alltagssituationen und unsere
vielfältigen Alltagserfahrungen hingegen lassen sich nicht
in Monumente gießen. Momental spiegelt dieses Spannungsverhältnis
des vergänglichen/alltäglichen und des herausragenden/dauernden.
Die Ausstellung The Momental (engl.) vereint die beiden
Begriffe Monument (monumental) und Moment. Durch den "Kunstbegriff"
Momental wird eine Schnittstelle eröffnet, mit der sich
das Gefühl des Moments beobachten lässt.
The Momental kritisiert die Kolonialisierung und "Routinisierung"
des Alltäglichen durch die Vermessung der Zeit. Der Bruch
mit der physikalischen Zeit in The Momental repräsentiert
die persönliche Revolution, die einen aus dem Trott der
immergleichen Gewohnheiten befreien kann.

Über die Konsequenzen des "performative turn"
für die Theater-Wissenschaft
Als Theaterwissenschaftlerin ist man mehr als in den anderen
Wissenschaften
mit der Frage konfrontiert, was denn eigentlich der Gegenstand
unsrer
Untersuchungen und theoretischen Reflexionen ist. Theater findet
immer im
Moment seiner Aufführung statt, es hinterlässt Spuren,
die nur
andeutungsweise eine Ahnung davon vermitteln können, wie
es als Ereignis
verlaufen ist. Aus Fotos, Kostümen, selbst aus Videoaufzeichnungen
vermitteln sich immer nur Teilaspekte dessen, was "tatsächlich"
gewesen ist.
Wie lässt sich diesem "Dilemma" begegnen? Ist
es überhaupt ein "Dilemma"
oder nicht vielmehr eine Chance für die (Theater-)Wissenschaft
ihre eigenen
Vorgehensweisen und Selbstverständlichkeiten einer Revision
zu unterziehen?
In dem Gespräch könnte es also um die Frage gehen:
Welche Konsequenzen hat
die Beschäftigung mit dem Performativen für die Theaterwissenschaft
selbst?

On the Consequences of a Performative turn for Theatre Studies
As a theatre researcher, one is confronted, more than in other
"scientific"
fields, with a set of rather elusive questions which embody the
difficulties posed by our discipline in our investigations and
theoretical
reflections. Theatre is forever taking place in the moment of
its
performance; although it leaves residues, these can only serve
to covertly
describe its complex totality, and how it took place as an event.
Through
artifacts such as photos, costumes and video, only a partial
and
per-spectival position can be forged, reducing the intangible
experience of
the performance to fragments - mediating the actual instantiation
into a
virtual memory. How can we negotiate this "dilemma"?
Is it a "dilemma" at
all, or rather a chance for theatre studies to cope with its
inherent
modes, and seek to revise reductionist strategies of analysis.
In the
discussion, we will thus concern ourselves with the implications
of this
'Performative' turn in theatre research, as well as extending
it to the
'Performative' dimensions of space and on Interferences of Installation
Art
and Theatre.
Dr. Christel Weiler is a scholar at Institut for theatre science
of the
Freie Universität Berlin since 1996, with focus on research
and teaching
in: Theory, aesthetics and analysis of contemporary theatre,
theoretical
and practical investigations for the work of the actor, in cooperation
within the research platform "Cultures of the Performative"
(working group
"Aesthetics of the Performative"). Recent publications
on Contemporary
Theatre include: "Theater als öffentlicher Raum. Die
Berliner Ermittlung
von Jochen Gerz und Esther Shalev-Gerz", Berlin 2005, "Etwas
ist dran.

Walking the City
Stephan Kurr + Jürgen Krusche

Jürgen Krusche will talk about his city-walks series
in the context of his research through the Hochschule für
Gestaltung und Kunst in Zürich. The city-walks, which operate
between ethnographic urban research and conceptual art, will
be presented; focusing on his image rich research from Berlin
and Tokyo. Through his presentation contemporary spatial practices
will be addressed. Firstly, it is the moment of moving that constructs
space.

Stephan Kurr will present his Erste Entscheidung (First Decision)
project (Book Published 2004 by Revolver - Archiv für aktuelle
Kunst) in which he performs a zigzag walk through the city (alternating
between possibilities of turning left, then turning right). In
contrast to the flaneur, each possible turn was taken, not only
to investigate the city in the sense of its boundaries, but also
to question the orthogonal position of the urban structure itself
- to radicalize the urban plan under the weight of its own logic.

The two will then proceed to lead a city walk starting at
Sparwasser HQ, with workshop participants - culminating in a
video document which will be included within the exhibition "The
Momental" which is currently on view in the gallery.

Jürgen Krusche führt in seine Serie der city-walks
ein, die im Kontext eines Forschungsprojekts an der Hochschule
für Gestaltung und Kunst in Zürich enstanden sind.
Die city-walks siedeln sich an zwischen ethnographischer
Stadtforschung und Konzept-Kunst. Neben der Präsentation
von Bildern aus Berlin und Tokio soll auch ein kurzer Einblick
in zur Zeit aktuell diskutierte Raumkonzepte gegeben werden.
Erst der Moment des Gehens konstituiert den Raum.

Mit seiner Arbeit "Erste Entscheidung beim Verlassen
der Wohnung" misstraut Stephan Kurr dem Flaneur, dem "derrive"
des Situationisten, versucht er dem gewohnten Gang ein Schnippchen
zu schlagen, in dem er sich dem orthogonalen Gerüst der
Stadtstruktur in radikalster Weise beugt. Der Umweg scheint das
Ziel zu sein.
