Yves Tanguy und der Surrealismus
Im Jahr seines hundertsten Geburtstages zeigt die Staatsgalerie eine Retrospektive über das Werk des Surrealisten der ersten Stunde Yves Tanguy. Gemeinsam mit Salvador Dali, Max Ernst und Alberto Giacometti, die bereits mit umfassenden Ausstellungen in der Staatsgalerie vorgestellt wurden, gehörte der Bretone zum engen Kreis der Pariser Avantgarde der zwanziger Jahre. Wie eng sich Tanguy der Surrealistengruppe verbunden fühlte, zeigt seine maßgebliche Mitwirkung an deren Manifesten, Zeitschriften und Ausstellungen, sei es in Paris, Brüssel, London, Prag, New York oder Mexiko.
Yves Tanguys verschlüsselte Bilderwelten, deren Deutung bis heute Rätsel aufgeben, hat bereits den Wortführer der Surrealisten André Breton fasziniert, sah er doch in dem Maler einen Geistesverwandten par excellence. Bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1955 erkundete Tanguy die Welt der Imagination, der Träume und Wunschvorstellungen. Im Zentrum der Präsentation steht die surrealistische Landschaft, der sich der Künstler wie kein anderer Maler seiner Zeit widmete. Tanguy verlieh seinen surrealistischen Visionen mit ihren submarinen Gewächsen, bizarren Formen und irrlichternden Strahlungen eine eigene Prägung. Die Landschaften, die geheimnisvoll in die Tiefe weisen, haben nicht zuletzt sein gesamtes Oeuvre entscheidend bestimmt. Gezeigt werden ca. 80 Leihgaben aus allen Schaffensphasen, beginnend mit frühen Arbeiten aus den Jahren 1926/7 bis zu seinem Spätwerk, das in seiner amerikanischen Wahlheimat Woodbury, Connecticut, entstand. Diesem Panorama werden Gemälde seiner Weggenossen wie De Chirico, Dali, Ernst, Masson, Miro und Oelze gegenübergestellt, die das Werk von Tanguy im Kontext seiner Epoche beleuchten.

Die Jubiläumsausstellung, die unter der Schirmherrschaft des Comité Tanguy steht, vereint Leihgaben aus öffentlichen Sammlungen und Privatbesitz, die im wesentlichen aus dem Ausland, vorwiegend Frankreich und den Vereinigten Staaten kommen.
Im Anschluß an die einzige Station in Europa wird die Retrospektive der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart von Mai bis August 2001 in der renommierten Menil Collection, Houston/ Texas gezeigt.
Ein umfangreiches Katalogbuch mit zahlreichen farbigen Abbildungen erscheint anläßlich der Ausstellung zum Preis von 39 Mark. Projektleiterin ist Karin v. Maur.

Yves Tanguy and surrealism
A retrospective exhibition marking the centenary of the birth of one of the pioneers of Surrealism, Yves Tanguy, will be organized and presented by the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart in December 2000. Like Salvador Dali, Max Ernst and Alberto Giacometti, the works of all three having already been shown in comprehensive exhibitions at the Staatsgalerie, this Breton artist belonged to the small circle of avantgarde artists which had formed itself in Paris during the twenties.
The extent to which Yves Tanguy committed himself to the Surrealist movement is evidenced by his decisive involvement in the movement's manifestos, publications and exhibitions, whether in Paris, Brussels, London, Prague, New York or Mexico.
Yves Tanguy's enigmatic imagery, which to this day has remained very much a rnysteryfascinated André Breton, the leading light of the Surrealist movement, frorn the very beginning,for he recognized in Yves Tanguy a painter of uncommon intellectual affinity to himself. Right up until his death in 1955,Tanguy proclaimed a world of the imagination, a world of dreams and fantasy. The exhibition will focus on his Surrealist landscapes, a theme to which Tanguy devoted himself like no other throughout his life. Tanguy lent his Surrealist visions, with their bizarre forms, half reminiscent of marine plants, and their will-o'-the-wisp-like luminescence, a character all their own. Indeed, it is precisely his landscapes, with their mysterious depth of meaning, which have determined the character of Tanguy's oeuvre as a whole.
The exhibition will be showing approximately 80 loaned paintings from all phases of his work, beginning with his early paintings of 1926/7 and continuing all the way through to his late works which he painted in Woodbury, Connecticut, in his adopted country of America. So as to visualize the works of Tanguy in the context of their time, this panorama of paintings will be complemented by a selection of the works of such like-minded contemporaries as De Chirico, Dali, Ernst, Masson, Miro and Oelze.

Under the patronage of the Comitee Tanguy, this centenary exhibition will comprise works loaned from both public and private collections. Most of the works will come from abroad, and mainly from France and the United States.
Following its presentation at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, which will be its only venue in Europe, this retrospective exhibition will be shown at the famous Menil Collection, Houston/Texas, from May u ntil August 2001.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a copiously illustrated catalogue costing 39 DM. The curator of the exhibition is Karin v. Maur.

Yves Tanguy et le Surréalisme
Une exposition rétrospective marquant le centième anniversaire de la naissance de l'un des pionniers du surrealisme, Yves Tanguy, sera organisée par la Staatsgalerie Stuttgart en décernbre 2000.Tout comme Salvador Dali, Max Ernst et Alberto Giacometti, dont les ceuvres ont déjà été présentées à la Staatsgalerie dans le cadre d'expositions de grande envergure, ce Breton d'origine appartenait au petit groupe d'artistes d'avant-garde qui s'était formé à Paris durant les années vingt. Tanguy a fortement manifesté son appartenance à ce groupe de surréalistes, comme en témoigne sa participation Aterminante à leurs manifestes, publications et expositions, que ce soit à Paris, à Bruxelles, à Londres, à Prague, à New York ou au Mexique. Les images énigmatiques d'Yves Tanguy, qui, jusqu'à ce jour, l'ont rien perdu de leur mystère, fascinaient déjà André Breton, tête de file du mouvement surréaliste, qui découvrait dans ce peintre une affinité de l'esprit hors pair. Jusqu'à sa mort en 1955, l'artiste n'a cessé d'explorer le monde de l'imaginaire, des rèves et des chimères.
L'exposition sera centrée plus particuliérernent sur ses paysages surréalistes, un thème auquel, tout au long de sa vie,Tanguy s'est consacré plus que tout autre peintre de son temps. A toutes ses visions surréalistes, avec leurs plantes aquatiques, leurs formes bizarres et leurs rayonnements de feux follets,Tanguy a prêté un caractère qui leur est propre. Et c'est précisément ses paysages, avec cette profondeur pleine de mystères qu'ils laissent entrevoir, qui ont marqué de manière déterminante l'ensemble de l'oeuvre de Tanguy.
L'exposition présentera environ 80 toiles réalisées aux différentes périodes de sa vie, partant d'ceuvres précoces datant des années 1926/1927, jusqu'à ses dernières toiles, réalisées à Woodbury, dans le Connecticut, aux Etats-Unis, où il avait choisi de vivre. Afin de replacer les oeuvres de Tanguy dans le contexte de leur temps, ce panorama est complété par des toiles des artistes qui l'ont accompagné dans sa voie: De Chirico, Dali, Ernst, Masson, Miro et Oelze.
Patronnée par le Comité Tanguy, cette exposition réalisée à l'occasion du centenaire de l'artiste réunit des toiles provenant de collections publiques et privées. La plupart des ceuvres viennent de l'étranger, notamment de France et des EtatsUnis.
Après, cette exposition, qui sera la seule en Europe, cette rétrospective concue par la Staatsgalerie de Stuttgart ira à Houston/ Texas, où el le sera présentée, de mai à août 2001, dans la célèbre Menil Collection.
L'exposition sera accompagnée d'un catalogue abondamment illustré, qui sera vendu au prix de 39 DM. La commissaire de l'exposition est Karin v. Maur.
