Sybille Rath erforscht seit vielen Jahren das Niemandsland zwischen Figuration und Abstraktion. Jenseits ideologischer Konfrontationen sondiert ihr malerisches Werk die Balance zwischen abstraktem Farbgestus und allegorisch-erzählerischer Lesweise. Im Ringen um die Rolle der Figur im Bild erweist sie sich als Zeichnerin, die lineare Kürzel auf subtile Weise mit malerischer Perfektion vereint. Ihre Bilder wildern nicht nur in Kunstgeschichte, Werbung und Alltagswelt, indem sie stilistisch vielschichtig ihre eigene Ikonographie entwickeln, sondern sie mobilisieren gleichzeitig auch das Potenzial abstrakter Malerei. Die abstrakten und figürlichen Bildelemente sind alle gleichermaßen dazu beschaffen, im Bildraum auf verschiedenen Ebenen formal und inhaltlich miteinander zu kommunizieren. In der zeit- und ortlosen Struktur des Bildraumes können sie einander verstärken, aber auch unterminieren, und führen letztlich zu einer Neubewertung der Malerei und ihrer Möglichkeiten, die mit zeitgenössischen Mitteln vollzogen wird. Die Arbeiten untersuchen dabei immer auch das eigene Bild-Sein: Ihre Leistung besteht darin, die Heterogenität der in den Bildern auftauchenden Motive und Strukturen zu einem homogenen Bildkosmos zu verschmelzen. Trotzdem bleiben die Bilder am Ende rätselhaft, versprechen keine Lösungen, sind vielmehr verstörend, provozierend und anregend.
Deckende Farbbahnen wechseln in Sybille Raths Bildern mit eher lavierend und transparent aufgetragenen mehrschichtigen Farbflächen, die ein malerisches Spiel der unterschiedlichen Oberflächen und Tiefen eingehen. In diesen offenen Dialogen mit dem Malgrund schweben filigrane oder auch klar konturierte Figurationen, die einem breiten Spektrum an figürlichen Möglichkeiten Raum bieten: Die vielgestaltigen Lineaturen ihrer Bilder mit teils märchenhaft anmutenden Titeln wie "Hüftengold" (2005), "The beautiful Island" (2006) oder "Am Wunschbaum" (2006) eröffnen zeitlose Gedankenräume, in denen Zufälliges, Gefundenes und Absichtsvolles eine dicht verwobene Beziehung eingehen.
Mit ihrer Sicht auf die Wirklichkeit der Dinge in ihrer grundlegenden Bedeutung für den Gesamtzusammenhang entwirft Sybille Rath einen Kosmos der Bildelemente zwischen Zonen der Wiedererkennbarkeit und subjektiver Verschlüsselung. Die Orientierung am Menschen und dem Potenzial der zwischenmenschlichen Kommunikation als Basis unserer Verständigung und grundlegendem Ausdruck unseres Daseins ist dabei nahe liegend. Die Bildelemente werden aus einem kohärenten Raum- und Zeitgefüge gerissen, vereinzelt, mit einer innerhalb ihres spezifischen Werkkontexts geltenden Bedeutung aufgeladen oder verschließen sich gar der Lesbarkeit. Reduziert auf gleichsam prägnante wie rätselhafte Formen werden diese in das malerische Bildkonzept integriert. Sie werden zu Chiffren, die ihren Inhalt in verdichteter Form vermitteln oder als gebrochene Linienkonfigurationen auf fast suggestive Weise wirken, ohne dass der Betrachter vom innerbildlichen Gespräch der Formereignisse ausgeschlossen bleibt. Einmal mehr zeigt sich ein erfrischender Umgang mit den Zeichen der Vergangenheit und der Geschichte der Malerei, die für die Gegenwart neu belebt wird.

The Mystery of Painting

Sybille Rath has been investigating the no man's land between representation and abstraction for many years. Her paintings sound out the equilibrium between abstract color gestures and allegorical, narrative perception. Circling around the role of the figure in an image, she establishes herself as a draftsman, capable of subtly uniting linear symbols with painterly perfection. Her paintings not only poach in the fields of art history, advertising and the everyday, but, through the development of her own stylistically complex iconography, simultaneously mobilize the potential of abstract painting as well. The abstract and figurative elements of the paintings are all created equally, in order that they may communicate with each other, both formally and contextually, within the painted plane on various levels. In the timeless and locationless structure of this space they can strengthen as well as undermine each other, ultimately leading to a new reassessment of painting and its possibilities, executed using contemporary means. The works are, thus, always engaged in an investigation of their own existence as images: their achievement consists of their ability to fuse the heterogeneity of the motifs and structures that emerge in the paintings into a homogeneous pictorial cosmos. The works, nonetheless, remain mysterious, offering no solutions, but are rather disturbing, provocative and stimulating.
In "Lucha Libre" (2002/2003) the artist's various principals interlock with one another in an exemplary fashion: opaque strips of color are alternated with color planes that are more like washes, layered and transparent. Dynamically crossing the pictorial space vertically, they instigate a painterly game by creating various surfaces and depths. Woven into this space are figurative, linear structures. Within these often large format, open dialogues with the painted surface float intricate or clearly contoured figurations that provide space for a wide range of figurative possibilities. It is in this manner in the painting "No Way Home," a poetic, narrative work of intense colors that almost seem to blossom like a flower on the canvas, that the contours of a woman turning out of the painting can be discerned in its lower right half; like a quote from an old master's work, she seems to be dressed in an old German costume. It is often comic-like figures, such as those in "Jack the Rabbit" (2005) or ones from non-European contexts, as in "Auf der Rolle" (2004), which interest the artist. Concrete commitments are rare; more often it is the diverse lineage of the artist's paintings with often fairytale-like titles, such as "Hüftengold" (2005), "The Beautiful Island" (2006) or "Am Wunschbaum" (2006), that opens timeless areas of thought in which the coincidental, found and intentional engage in a densely woven relationship.
By regarding a thing's reality in its fundamental meaning within its overall context, Sybille Rath creates a cosmos of pictorial elements between the zones of recognizability and subjective codification. The orientation towards people and the potential of interpersonal communication as the basis for our understanding and fundamental expression of our existence is obvious. The elements of the paintings are ripped out of their coherent spatial and temporal structure, isolated, charged with a valid meaning specific to the context of the given work, eve closing themselves off to readability altogether at times. Reduced to forms equally concise as puzzling, they are integrated into the painterly image concept. They become codes that relay their contents in condensed form or, appearing in an almost suggestive manner, broken linear configurations that nonetheless include the viewer in the inner pictorial conversation of the forms' activities. The markings of the past and the history of painting are once again approached in a refreshing way, vitalizing the medium anew. (Translation: Marie Frohling)
