JULY, IV, MDCCLXXVI
Eine Replik der New Yorker Freiheitsstatue, die in Originalgröße
und mit einem Gewicht von rund 31 Tonnen Kupfer nach Originalverfahren
produziert wurde, steht im Zentrum der Ausstellung JULY, IV,
MDCCLXXVI von Danh Vo. Zerlegt in ihre einzelnen Bestandteile
füllt die monumentale Skulptur das gesamte Obergeschoss
der Kunsthalle Fridericianum. Der dänisch-vietnamesische
Künstler rückt damit Überlegungen zum Begriff
der Freiheit, sowohl der politischen als auch der persönlichen,
in den Fokus seiner künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung.
Die Masse und die physische Präsenz der reproduzierten
Miss Liberty werden im Untergeschoss der Kunsthalle Fridericianum
mit einer räumlichen Offenheit kontrastiert. Hier lenkt
Danh Vo die Konzentration auf ein markantes Fundstück: die
originale Schreibmaschine, auf der Theodore Kaczynski im Jahr
1995 sein Unabomber-Manifest verfasste. Dem Universitätsprofessor
und Terrorist gelang es durch Erpressung, seine radikale Zivilisationskritik
anonym in der "New York Times" und der "Washington
Post" zu veröffentlichen. Kurz nach dem Erscheinen
des Textes konnte Kaczynski in einer kleinen Hütte in den
Bergen von Montana ausfindig gemacht und festgenommen werden.
Sowohl die Hütte als auch die in ihr gefundenen Gegenstände,
einschließlich dieser Schreibmaschine, sind kürzlich
vom FBI versteigert worden.
Das Ausstellen von Objekten nach dem Prinzip des Ready-made
ist eine für Danh Vo bezeichnende künstlerische Strategie.
Seine ausgewählten Objekte sind vielschichtige Bedeutungsträger,
mit denen Vo Geschichten erzählt und Beziehungen offen legt.
Für die Kasseler Ausstellung ergibt sich ein weit verzweigter
Erzählstrang, der ausgehend von dem Freiheitsbegriff das
Scheitern von politischen, gesellschaftlichen und auch persönlichen
Zielen erörtert und Fragen zu Selbstbestimmung und Verantwortung
aufgreift und deren mögliche Definition erweitert.

Edition Danh Vo
Exklusiv zu JULY, IV, MDCCLXXVI erscheint unter dem Titel
Season's Greetings eine Edition von Danh Vo, die in engem
Bezug zur Ausstellung steht. In einer Auflage von 24 Exemplaren
hat der Künstler Fundstücke zusammengestellt, von denen
jedes einzelne auf ein Werk der Kasseler Ausstellung referiert:
Eine handgefertigte Holzkiste enthält jeweils eine Ausgabe
der ersten Auflage des Buches "Harvard and the Unabomber
The Education of an American Terrorist", ein T-Shirt
aus dem Souvenir-Shop der New Yorker Freiheitsstatue, eine Tasse
aus dem "George Bush Library and Museum", bedruckt
mit einem Zitat von Barbara Bush, sowie eine Karteikarte, auf
die mit der originalen Schreibmaschine des Unabombers Theodore
Kaczynski das titelgebende Datum des amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitstages
geschrieben wurde.

Der Direktor der Kunsthalle Basel und Kurator der Ausstellung
Where the Lions Are von Danh Vo spricht vor dem Hintergrund
der aktuellen Ausstellung über die künstlerischen Strategien
Vos, seine Bezugspunkte im Kunstkontext und seine Herangehensweise
an Ausstellungsprojekte. Eintritt frei

Kasseler Musiktage: Streichquartett-Konzert in der Kunsthalle
Fridericianum
Als renommiertes Festival thematisieren die Kasseler Musiktage
in diesem Jahr viele und vielfältige Spannungsverhältnisse.
Unter dem Titel "Im Atem der Zeit" trifft Neues auf
Bewährtes und mutige Experimente setzen sich mit Meisterlichem
und Vorbildhaftem auseinander. Das interdisziplinär arbeitende
Ensemble Quartett PLUS 1 leitet daraus die Frage nach der eigenen
Identität ab: Was ist und kann ein Streichquartett heute
sein? Im Spannungsfeld von Alter Musik, Pop und zeitgenössischer
Komposition, Bewegung und Improvisation suchen die vier Musikerinnen
nach dem Klang unserer Zeit. Dabei lässt Quartett PLUS 1
die Kompositionen "American Jesus Suite" (Auftragskomposition
2011, Stefan Wurz) und Benjamin Franklins "String Quartet"
aus dem Jahr 1778 auf die Ausstellung JULY, IV, MDCCLXXVI
von Danh Vo reagieren und eröffnet so dem Publikum neue
und flexible Perspektiven für Augen und Ohren.

DokfestForum in der Kunsthalle Fridericianum
Im Rahmen des 28. Kasseler Dokumentarfilm- und Videofests
lädt die Kunsthalle Fridericianum erneut zum DokfestForum
ein. Neben Sichtungsplätzen, die allen Festivalbesucher/innen
die Möglichkeit bieten, die gesamte Filmauswahl des Festivals
anzusehen, gibt es ein abwechslungsreiches Abendprogramm: Unter
dem Titel "Ortsverbunden Locally connected"
findet am Donnerstag um 18 Uhr eine Gesprächsrunde mit Kara
Blake, Martina Bramkamp und Mathilde ter Heijne statt. Am Freitag
um 18 Uhr zeigt der Künstler Christian Jankowski eine Auswahl
aus seinem filmischen uvre und spricht über seine Arbeiten,
und am Samstag, ebenfalls um 18 Uhr, setzt sich eine Diskussionsrunde
mit Themen rund um das Sammeln von Film- und Videokunst auseinander.
Teilnehmen werden die renommierte Videokünstlerin Candice
Breitz, der Sammler Ivo Wessel und die Galeristin Anita Beckers.

With JULY, IV, MDCCLXXVI, Danh Vo shifts the focus
of his artistic investigations to the concept of freedom. The
title designates 4 July 1776, the date of the signing of the
U.S. Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. The writing
in Roman numerals is taken from the tablet that the figure of
New York's Statue of Liberty is holding in her left hand. Since
1886, Miss Liberty has symbolized the hope of a better life for
refugees and immigrants arriving in New York. She is the most
important emblem of freedom and independence, which Danh Vo absorbs.
Based on the dimensions of the original and its copper weight
of some 31 tons, Vo had a replica of the Statue of Liberty made
which forms the main part of JULY, IV, MDCCLXXVI.
The confrontation with physical mass contrasts with a spatial
openness in the ground floor, where Danh Vo steers attention
to a striking found piece: the original typewriter on which Theodore
Kaczynski wrote the Unabomber's Manifesto. Kaczynski, a university
professor and terrorist, who carried out bomb attacks in the
USA for 18 years, offered to stop those attacks if the newspapers
published his manifesto. Shortly after the text appeared in the
New York Times and in the Washington Post, Kacyznski
was found in a small cabin in the mountains of Montana and got
arrested. Recently this cabin as well as its contents, including
the typewriter, were auctioned by the FBI.
Exhibiting objects based on the ready-made principle is a
characteristic artistic strategy of Danh Vo. The objects Vo selects
are multilayered bearers of meaning which he uses to tell stories
and disclose relationships. They always contain a complex political
and poetic system with which the artist perceptively links art
and life. The exhibition in Kassel also involves a widely branching
narrative strand, which, starting from the concept of freedom,
explores failed political, social and personal aims, takes up
issues of self-determination and responsibility, and extends
their definitions.

Exclusively accompanying JULY, IV, MDCCLXXVI, an edition
under the title Season's Greetings by Danh Vo is being
brought out which is closely tied to the exhibition. In an edition
of 24 copies, the artist compiled found objects, each of which
refers to a work in the Kassel exhibition. The hand-made wooden
boxes each contain a first-edition copy of the book "Harvard
and the Unabomber The Education of an American Terrorist",
a T-shirt from the Statue of Liberty souvenir shop in New York,
a cup from the "George Bush Library and Museum", with
a quote by Barbara Bush printed on it, as well as an index card
on which the title of the show the date of the American
Declaration of Independence was typed on the typewriter
used by Unabomber Theodore Kaczynski.

Kasseler Musiktage: String quartet concert at Kunsthalle Fridericianum
A renowned music festival, the "Kasseler Musiktage"
(Kassel Music Days) will explore different dichotomies this year.
Under the title "Im Atem der Zeit" (The Breath of the
Times), modern works meet traditional pieces, and bold experiments
engage with the masterly and exemplary. The ensemble Quartett
PLUS 1 is using the occasion to explore its own identity: What
is a string quartet today and what can it be? In the field of
tension between early music, pop and contemporary composition,
movement and improvisation, the musicians are searching for the
sound of our age. As a reference to Danh Vo's exhibition JULY,
IV, MDCCLXXVI, Quartett PLUS 1 play "American Jesus
Suite" (a commissioned piece by Stefan Wurz from 2011) and
Benjamin Franklin's "String Quartet", dating back to
1778, thus opening up new perspectives for the audience's eyes
and ears.
