Animismus
Wie unterscheiden wir Dinge von Wesen? Die Ausstellung
"Animismus" untersucht die Grenzziehung zwischen Leben
und Nicht-Leben anhand ästhetischer Symptome.
Die Frage danach, was Seele, Leben und Handlungsmacht besitzt,
wird in verschiedenen Kulturen höchst unterschiedlich beantwortet.
Dabei ist sie für die Organisation der materiellen Beziehungen
zur Natur ebenso entscheidend wie für die Frage, welchen
sozialen und politischen Status Lebewesen einnehmen. Mit dem
Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts im Zuge des Kolonialismus geprägten
Begriff "Animismus" bezeichneten europäische Anthropologen
jene damals noch als "primitiv" geltenden Kulturen,
in denen im Unterschied zur westlichen Moderne die Welt der Dinge,
die Natur oder der gesamte Kosmos als belebt und von Seelen oder
Geistern bevölkert wahrgenommen wird. Der Animismus verkörperte
exemplarisch das "Andere" der Moderne - die Subjektivierung
und Personifizierung der Natur in animistischen Gesellschaften
wurde der Objektivierung der Natur durch die rationalistische
Wissenschaft diametral entgegengesetzt.
In den letzten Jahrzehnten wurden die etablierten Grenzziehungen
zwischen beseelter und unbeseelter Materie, zwischen reinem Subjekt
und bloßem Objekt im Hinblick auf globale und technologische
Entwicklungen jedoch zunehmend auf den Prüfstand gestellt.
Im deutschsprachigen Raum ist dieser Diskurs bisher weitestgehend
unbeachtet geblieben. Gibt es einen Zusammenhang zwischen Animismus
und den ästhetischen Effekten der Animation, die heute in
der Massenkultur allgegenwärtig sind? Die Vorstellung vom
Animismus wird in diesem Projekt zu einem Rückspiegel für
eine Betrachtung der westlichen Grenzziehungen, und die Art und
Weise, wie diese in der Kunst und den Medien verhandelt und überschritten
werden.
Die Ausstellung greift vom 16.03. - 06.05.2012 die
gegenwärtig auf breiter Ebene stattfindende Neubewertung
der Moderne im Sinne von Bruno Latours Titel "Wir sind nie
modern gewesen" auf und stellt Positionen vor, die den Animismus-Begriff
neu ausloten. Mit Arbeiten von rund 30 internationalen Künstlern
sowie einer Materialsammlung aus der Technik-, Kultur- und Naturwissenschaftsgeschichte
entsteht im Haus der Kulturen der Welt ein anthropologisches
Museum der Moderne.

How do we distinguish things from beings? The exhibition
"Animism examines the delineation between life and non-life
on the basis of aesthetic symptoms.
The question of what possesses a soul, life, or the power
to act receives highly different answers from culture to culture.
The question is of equal importance to the organization of material
relationships with nature as to the issue of what social and
political status a creature can lay claim to. The term animism,
stems from 19th-century colonial ethnology. Animism is generally
understood to be a religious practice, which, in contrast to
the objectivizing standpoint of modern rationality views objects
and nature as living things, which possess different forms of
subjectivity.
Animism once represented an example of the "other"
in modernity - the subjectivization and personification of nature
in animist societies was diametrically opposed to the objectivization
of nature by rationalist science.
In recent decades, in the light of global and technological developments,
established distinctions between ensouled and soulless material,
between pure subject and mere object have been brought increasingly
into question. This discourse has been largely ignored in the
German-speaking world. Is there a link between animism and the
aesthetic effects of the forms of animation which are ubiquitous
in mass culture today? In this project, our perception of animism
becomes a rear-view mirror in which to observe western demarcations
and the way these are negotiated and crossed by art and the media.
From 16 March to 06 May 2012, the exhibition addresses
the widespread and inter-disciplinary reevaluation of modernity
taking place in recent years along the lines of Bruno Latour's
publication "We Have Never Been Modern" and presents
positions which reassess our understanding of the term "animism".
With works by some 30 international artists, curator Anselm Franke
transforms the Haus der Kulturen der Welt into a self-reflexive
"anthropological museum of modernity".

Die Konferenz zur Ausstellung führt eine Vielzahl von aktuellen
Perspektiven aus Ethnologie, Literaturwissenschaft, Kunst, Naturwissenschaften,
Wissenschaftsgeschichte und Politik zusammen. Mögliche und
überraschende Korrespondenzen und Verbindungen aufzuspüren,
das Konzept sowie die Geschichte des Animismus für eine
Selbstbefragung und neue kritische Reflexion der Moderne fruchtbar
zu machen, ist dabei Fokus und Ausgangspunkt. 16.03. und 17.03.,

Ein Jahr Revolution in Syrien - zwischen friedlichem Kampf
und brutaler Unterdrückung
Podiumsdiskussion, Dokumentarfilme, kulturelles Rahmenprogramm
Seitdem am 18. März 2011 erstmals Tausende gegen das
Assad- Regime demonstrierten, hat die Gewalt von Geheimdiensten
und Militär gegen die friedlichen Demonstranten zu einer
landesweiten Revolution geführt. Ein Jahr später ist
die Lage in Syrien dramatischer denn je. Die UNO geht von mehr
als 7.500 Toten aus, darunter etwa 700 Kinder und Jugendliche.
Das syrische Volk braucht dringend Hilfe! Ziel der Veranstaltung
ist deshalb die praktische Unterstützung: die Vorstellung
von Hilfsmöglichkeiten und das Sammeln von Spenden. Bei
der Podiumsdiskussion diskutieren Vertreter der syrischen Opposition
und Kenner des Nahen Ostens. 23.03., 18 h.
Animism | Opening
With works by about 30 international artists including Marcel
Broodthaers, Jimmie Durham, Yayoi, Kusama, David Maljkovic, Roee
Rosen, Rosemarie Trockel and many others, the exhibition
"Animism" opens in Thursday - the first in a whole
weekend of vernissages. While the conference begins on Friday
with a round table discussing "Animism and other Histories
of Modernity", on Sunday curator Ansem Franke
gives a guided tour of the exhibition. Taking place at the same
time is the comic workshop for children, "Tier-Mensch-Tier"
("Animal-Human-Animal") Opening: Thu., 15.03., 7
p.m.
Animism | Conference
The conference on the exhibition brings together a broad range
of current perspectives from the fields of ethnology, literary
criticism, art, the natural sciences, the history of science
and politics. The focus and starting point of the debate is to
identify possible and surprising correspondences and connections,
render both the concept and history of animism a fruitful subject
for self-interrogation and foster a new critical reflection of

Animism | Film and Photo Action
We pet our computer, curse the printer and talk to our potted
plants. Our smartphone says "good night" and tells
us the weather forecast for the following morning. Sometimes
objects become alive. Do you sometimes make the same experience?
What if we were not alone? Send us your photo or video of an
object or setting that appears to be alive but whose vivacity
is not something we can take for granted: an object with a face,
perhaps, an animated cartoon or a technical device with a life
of its own. Films should be not longer than 60 sec. More information

A Year of Revolution in Syria - Peaceful Struggle and Brutal
Oppression
Panel discussion, documentary films, cultural support program
Since thousands of people took to the streets to protest against
the regime of Bashir al-Assad for the first time on 18 March
2011, the violence perpetrated by the secret services and the
military against demonstrators has led to a nationwide revolution.
A year later, the situation in Syria is more dramatic than ever.
The United Nations estimates the number of people killed at more
than 7,500, including some 700 children and young people. The
people of Syria urgently need help! Therefore, the aim of this
event is to provide practical assistance by offering ways to
help and collecting donations. In the panel discussion, representatives
of the Syrian opposition and Middle East experts discuss the
