Between Wallls and Windows. Architektur und Ideologie
Nur im September ist das architektonische Wahrzeichen Haus
der Kulturen der Welt im Rahmen der von Valerie Smith kuratierten
Ausstellung als Großskulptur zu erleben. Die zehn ortsspezifischen
Projekte und Interventionen von Amateur Architecture Studio,
Arno Brandlhuber, Ângela Ferreira, Terence Gower, Initiative
Weltkulturerbe Doppeltes Berlin, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle,
Studio Miessen, Marko San_anin, Eran Schaerf, Supersudaca werden
von den Künstlern und Architekten in einem Rundgang vorgestellt.
Zum Abschluss lädt Studio Miessen in den Dachterrassenkiosk.

at the Beginning of the 21st Century
Wang Shu und Lu Wenyu vereinen in den Arbeiten ihres
1997 in Hangzhou, China, gegründeten Amateur Architecture
Studio lokale Handwerks- traditionen und Baumaterialien mit
zeitgenössischem Design: ein Gegenentwurf zur globalisierten
Architekturpraxis. Mit dem Berliner Architektenpaar Louisa
Hutton und Matthias Sauerbruch sprechen sie am Sonntag
über die Architekturpraxis im beginnenden 21. Jahrhundert.

Architektur und Ideologie führt am Eröffnungswochenende
durch die Ausstellung und gibt Einblicke in Hintergründe
und Konzeption des Projektes. Die Leiterin des Bereichs Bildende
Kunst, Film und digitale Medien initiierte im Haus der Kulturen
der Welt bereits Labor Berlin, eine Plattform für
in Berlin ansässige internationale Künstler. Sie ist
Herausgeberin und Redakteurin mehrerer Publikationen, darunter
"Juan Downey: The Invisible Architect" (2011). Ausstellungsführung

Between Walls and Windows. Architektur und Ideologie
Only in September visitors can experience the architectural
landmark Haus der Kulturen der Welt as a large-scale sculpture
- as part of the exhibition curated by Valerie Smith. The ten
location-specific project and interventions by Amateur Architecture
Studio, Arno Brandlhuber, Ângela Ferreira, Terence Gower,
Initiative Weltkulturerbe Doppeltes Berlin, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle,
Studio Miessen, Marko San_anin, Eran Schaerf, and Supersudaca
will be presented by artists and architects in a series of guided
tours. After that, Studio Miessen invites you to the kiosk on
the Roof Terrace. Exhibition Opening Sat 1 September from
4 p.m., Admission free.
Life and Design: Practicing Architecture at the Beginning
of the 21st Century
The work of Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu's Amateur
Architecture Studio, founded in 1997 in Hangzhou, China,
combines local traditions of craft and materials with contemporary
design: an alternative blueprint to the globalized practice of
architecture. On Sunday, they and the Berlin-based architects
Louisa Hutton and Matthias Sauerbruch discuss the
dimensions of architecture at the dawn of the 21st century. Discussion

On the opening weekend, Valerie Smith, curator of Between
Walls and Windows. Architektur und Ideologie, offers guided
tours of the exhibition and some insights into the background
and conception of the project. The head of the visual arts, film
and digital media division has already initiated Labor Berlin,
a platform for international artists working in Berlin, for the
Haus der Kulturen der Welt. She has edited or published numerous
publications, including "Juan Downey: The Invisible Architect"

Panel Architektur und Ideologie I: How to Imagine
Die vielschichtigen Beziehungen von Architektur und Ideologie
werden am Samstag, 15.9., im Panel "Architektur
und Ideologie I: How to Imagine", thematisiert. Architekten,
Stadtplaner und Kuratoren befassen sich mit den Ideologien einer
Gesellschaft, deren Werte und Überzeugungen aus konkreten
Strukturen des menschlichen Alltags hervorgehen. Mit Karin Sander,
Gal Kirn, Robert Burghardt, Leonie Baumann, Markus Miessen, moderiert
von Kuratorin Valerie Smith. Am 22.9. wird die Thematik
in "Architektur und Ideologie II: How to Intervene"

Im Rahmen der Berlin Art Week (11. - 16.9.) ist an diesem
Wochenende Studio Miessens Dachterrassenkiosk zu empfehlen: Am
Freitag, 14.9., ab 19.30 h präsentiert Markus Miessen
hier eine portugiesische Filmnacht mit Screenings von João
Salaviza, Joana Cunha Ferreira, João Rosas
und António Cunha Telles. Am Samstag, 15.9.,
ab 19 h, reicht "Das Gift" BBQ und Drinks. Es folgen
Lesungen von Federica Bueti, sowie Jan Verwoert und
eine Intervention von Simon Fujiwara. Um 21 h spielen
La Stampa, der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Sonntagszeitung
zufolge die "beste deutsche Popband".

Niche - Art & Architecture Tours Berlin, ein multidisziplinäres
Team aus Kunsthistorikern, Denkmalpflegern, Künstlern und
Architekten, führt am Sonntag durch "Between
Walls and Windows. Architektur und Ideologie". Zeitgleich
mit der deutschsprachigen Führung bieten die "Tours
de Babel" auf Englisch, Spanisch, Französisch und

As part of the Berlin Art Week (11 1609.), Studio Miessen's
Roof Terrace Kiosk is to be recommended this weekend: on Friday,
1409., from 7.30 p.m., Markus Miessen presents a Portuguese
Film Night with screenings of films by João Salaviza,
Joana Cunha Ferreira, João Rosas and António
Cunha Telles. On Saturday, 1509., from 7 p.m., "Das
Gift" serves BBQ food and drinks, followed by readings by
Federica Bueti and Jan Verwoert as well as an intervention
by Simon Fujiwara. At 9 p.m. La Stampa, "Germany's
best pop band", according to the Frankfurter Allgemeine
Sonntagszeitung, take to the stage.

On Sunday, Niche - Art & Architecture Tours
Berlin, an interdisciplinary team of art historians, artists
and architects, offers a guided tour of the exhibition "Between
Walls and Windows. Architektur und Ideologie". Running concurrently
with the German-language tour, "Tours de Babel"
offers insights into the exhibition in English, Spanish,
French and Italian. kids&teens@hkw turns the roof
terrace into a language laboratory. Under the guidance of Nicola
Caroli, participants can poetically and playfully explore
Studio Miessen's Roof Terrace Kiosk. Sun 1609., 3 p.m. Children

is a compilation of analyses, thoughts, and literary narratives
on the relationship between architecture and ideology. Artists,
photographers, architects, and writers examine the rich historic
legacy of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt and develop a blueprint
for an understanding of architecture that resists the global
tendency toward uniformity and focuses on the charm of regional
specialties.

The audio-guide to "Between Walls and Windows.
Architektur und Ideologie" offers insights into the
project and, in ten chapters, tells the stories of the exhibition's
artistic interventions. These interventions address questions
regarding the dimensions of architecture as an instrument in
construction history, philosophy, politics and other fields.

Curated by Anselm Franke and Annett Busch in collaboration with
the artists in the exhibition and research curator Heidi Ballet
The year 1945 - the "year zero" of Germany and Europe
- brought a reordering of global relationships. This political
realignment is not recounted here as a history of the Cold War
ideological blocs. Rather, the project focuses on the respective
development of European and African history over the course of
decolonization, and the ways in which they intertwined, and on
the attempt by actors during this period to fundamentally transform
the framework conditions of the colonial modern era.
Probing deeply into specific exemplary questions, the exhibition
and conference explore the politics of historiography and of
the articulation of historical consciousness. The central point
of reference is the first Asian-African conference in 1955 in
Bandung, Indonesia, at which 600 delegates from 29 nations and
liberation movements drafted a model for collaboration by the
global South under the banner of an anti-colonial modernity -
a milestone in the history of decolonization that launched the
Non-Aligned Movement. The installations and films in the exhibition
- including four new productions - highlight historical case
studies along with their inscribed, and still competing, narratives.
The talks, lectures, and films of the conference in October and11.
survey "geographies of collaboration," illuminating
the gray areas in the way this term has been used over time.

title "Matters of Collaboration" in 2012 in Algiers,
Dakar, Paris, and Johannesburg in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut
in Brussels and with funding from the Excellence Initiative of
