Über Schönheit
Schönheit boomt. Im Alltag, in der Kunst und der Wissenschaft. So schreibt sie sich nicht nur mittels chirurgischer Eingriffe in die Körper ein, sondern ist erneut ins Zentrum künstlerischer Kreativität und ästhetischer Diskussion gerückt. Vor dem Hintergrund feministischer, postmoderner und multikultureller Fragestellungen wird die Beziehung von Schönheit und Kunst heute neu definiert. Die Diskussion über die Bedeutung von Schönheit in unterschiedlichen Kulturen eröffnet neue Perspektiven jenseits der philosophischen Tradition des Westens. Diesem Diskurs widmet sich das Haus der Kulturen der Welt mit dem Programm ÜBER SCHÖNHEIT vom 18. März bis 15. Mai 2005.
Internationale zeitgenössische Kunstpraktiken in Bildender Kunst, Performance, Musik, Film, Architektur stehen dabei im Zentrum. Der Fokus der Veranstaltungsreihe ÜBER SCHÖNHEIT liegt auf einer großen Ausstellung. Sie präsentiert 24 Künstler aus 16 Ländern. Im internationalen Performing-Arts-Programm stellen Tänzerpersönlichkeiten ihre Auseinandersetzung mit dem Schönen dar. Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung Beauty Politics erörtern interdisziplinäre Projekte zu Themen wie Die schöne Seele, Die sinnliche Stadt, Der perfekte Mensch, Der musikalische Moment die gesellschaftliche Relevanz von Schönheit. Eine abschließende internationale Konferenz (13. - 14. Mai) versammelt Wissenschaftler, Autoren und Kritiker aus der ganzen Welt. Workshops für Jugendliche und eine Netz-Kunst-Plattform ergänzen das Programm.
Das Projekt ÜBER SCHÖNHEIT entsteht in enger Zusammenarbeit des Hauses der Kulturen der Welt mit einem internationalen Netz von Kunstexperten und Wissenschaftlern. Der Kurator der Ausstellung ist Wu Hung (University of Chicago, Department of Art History). Die Konferenz hat Ackbar Abbas (University of Hongkong, Department of Comparative Literature), das Performing-Arts-Programm Johannes Odenthal konzipiert.
An dem Projekt beteiligt sind u.a.: Matthew Barney, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Michael Lin, Shirin Neshat, Liu Zheng, Gaoyan Jinzi, Luo Lili, Jin Xing, Ko Ishikawa, Giuliana Bruno, Gayatri Spivak und David Eng.
ÜBER SCHÖNHEIT wird vom Hauptstadtkulturfond gefördert.

ABOUT BEAUTY

The beauty business is booming in our everyday lives, among scholars and scientists, and in art. Beauty is not only being literally etched into our bodies by plastic surgeons, but has resurfaced as a key concern in creativity and a major theme in aesthetic debate. Now the relationship between beauty and art is being redefined in the context of feminist, post-modern and multicultural issues. Discussing what beauty means in various cultures has opened up new perspectives, liberating debate from the confines of the Western philosophical tradition. The House of World Cultures will focus upon this discourse with the program ABOUT BEAUTY from March 18 to May 15, 2005.
The practices of international contemporary art in the visual arts, performance, music, film and architecture are at the center of attention. The focus of the program ABOUT BEAUTY is an extensive exhibition presenting twenty-four artists from sixteen countries. In the international Performing Arts Program, various figures from the world of dance portray their individual encounters with beauty. Within the scope of the series Beauty Politics, interdisciplinary projects devoted to the themes of Ethics and Spirituality, The Sensual City", "Modifications of the Body" and "Beauty in Contemporary Music" investigate the social relevance of beauty. A concluding international conference (May 13 14) brings together scientists, authors and critics from around the world. Workshops for young people and an artistic project created for the Internet round out the program.
The project ABOUT BEAUTY was conceived in close cooperation between the House of World Cultures and an international network of art experts and scholars. The curator of the exhibition is Wu Hung (University of Chicago, Department of Art History). The conference was conceived by Ackbar Abbas (University of Hong Kong, Department of Comparative Literature), the Performing Arts Program by Johannes Odenthal.

Das Festival der Entdeckungen: IN TRANSIT zeigt die weltweit aktuellen Entwicklungen im zeitgenoessischen Tanz, Theater und in der Musik.
Vom 2. bis 18. Juni sind im Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) insgesamt 61 Vorstellungen aus 14 Laendern an 17 Tagen zu sehen, darunter acht Welt- und Europapremieren.
Die vierte Auflage von IN TRANSIT steht im Zeichen einer deutlichen Neuerung: Die chinesische Komponistin Liu Sola ergaenzt das bisherige Leitungsteam bestehend aus dem afrikanisch-franzoesischen Taenzer-Choreographen Koffi Kôkô und Johannes Odenthal vom HKW. Fuer IN TRANSIT hat sie eine Konzertreihe mit hochkaraetigen musikalischen Grenzgaengern zusammengestellt, u.a. mit Sussan Deyhim, dem Ensemble Modern und John Zorn.
Eroeffnet wird IN TRANSIT 05 am 2. Juni mit einem Fokus auf die japanische Tanzszene, wo sich nach dem Butoh eine neue und innovative, in Europa bisher kaum gewuerdigte Bewegungssprache entwickelt hat. Den Festivalauftakt macht die junge Gruppe Leni Basso aus Tokyo, die virtuos neue Medien und Tanz miteinander verknuepft. Es folgen drei Stuecke aus Japan, u.a. von Akira Kasai und Yamada Un.
Weitere Hoehepunkte sind die fuenf dezidiert politischen Arbeiten aus Afrika, der Auftritt von Russlands erster zeitgenoessischer Tanzcompany um die Choreographin Olga Pona und die juengste Inszenierung des mexikanischen Regisseurs Claudio Valdés Kuri, koproduziert von den Wiener Festwochen und dem HKW. Mit seiner behutsamen Aktualisierung der Johanna-von-Orleans-Legende schafft er es, ebenso wie das indonesische ¡Garagen-Theater" mit ihrem Epos ¡Waktu Batu", das Gegenwaertige im Vergangenen sichtbar zu machen, Parallelen zwischen Gruendungsmythen und Globalisierungsmoderne zu zeigen. Ueberdurchschnittlich viele IN TRANSIT-Kuenstler beschaeftigen sich 2005 mit dem Bedeutungswandel von m Heimat, den Konstrukten Nation und Identitaet im Umbruch.
Neben den 15 Tanz-, vier Theater- und fuenf Musik-Produktionen laedt IN TRANSIT ein zu zahlreichen Kuenstlergespraechen, zwei Konferenzen zum Tanz in Japan und Afrika sowie dem Ballroom by night.

The "Festival of Discovery": IN TRANSIT presents the latest developments in contemporary dance, theatre and music from all over the world. From 2 to 18 June, the House of World Cultures (HKW) is staging sixty-one performances °V including eight world and European premières - from fourteen different countries in seventeen days.
The fourth IN TRANSIT international performing arts festival in the House of World Cultures has taken the notion of innovation to heart - offering an expanded music programme, with Chinese composer Liu Sola joining the curatorial team of West-African-French dancer and choreographer Koffi Kôkô and the House of World Cultures' Johannes Odenthal. For IN TRANSIT, she has arranged her own concert series with top-class musicians who work with different genres, including Sussan Deyhim, the "Ensemble Modern " and John Zorn.
IN TRANSIT 05 opens with a spotlight on the Japanese dance scene, which has brought forth a unique, innovative and as yet hardly recognised modern dance language: post-Butoh and parallel developments in Europe.The festival will be opened by the young group Leni Basso from Tokyo, who brilliantly combine new media and dance. They are followed by Akira Kasai and Yamada Un, who will be playing three Japanese pieces.
Other highlights are the five decidedly political works from Africa, a performance by Russia's first contemporary dance company led by choreographer Olga Pona, and the latest production by Mexican director Claudio Valdés Kuri, co-produced by the Vienna Festival and the HKW. With his sensitive modern interpretation of the legend of Joan of Arc he succeeds in making the present visible in past events, and in showing parallels between mythologies spun around the foundation of nations and communities on the one hand, and modernities in the age of globalisation on the other. The Indonesian Garage Theatre addresses similar themes in their epic piece Waktu Batu.
In 2005, many of IN TRANSIT's performers will be thematising the changes in the meaning of home, and the constructs of nation and identity in an age of transition. In addition to the fifteen dance, four theatre and five music productions, IN TRANSIT will be presenting countless talks with artists, two conferences on dance in Japan and Africa, and the Ballroom by Night.
