transmediale 09: Festival für Kunst und digitale Kultur
Mit dem Festivalthema DEEP NORTH schaut die transmediale.09
im Jahr 20 nach der Wende auf den globalen Kulturwandel, der
aus dem Klimawandel erwachsen wird. Das Festival reflektiert
die Notwendigkeit, globale Ereignisse neu zu lesen und durch
Entwicklung eines erweiterten kulturellen Vokabulars die autonome
und kritische Herangehensweise der Kunst in diese komplexen Verhältnisse
mit einzubeziehen. Mit der Umgestaltung des Hauses der Kulturen
der Welt durch die informelle Ausstellungsarchitektur der Berliner
Designer- und Architektengruppe raumtaktik beginnt die transmediale.09
ihre Reise in die tiefen Sphären künstlerischer Strategien
zu klima-kulturellen Fragen.
Internationaler Programmbeirat 2008 - 2011
Ein Gremium aus zehn Persönlichkeiten der internationalen
Kunst- und Kulturszene wird für vier Jahre das Haus der
Kulturen der Welt bei seiner inhaltlichen und strategischen Ausrichtung
beraten. Zum Beirat gehören: Prof. Ulrich Beck (München/London),
Johnson Chang (Hongkong/Shanghai), Dr. Vishakha N. Desai, (New
York), Prof. Dr. Manthia Diawara (New York), Van Dyke Parks (Los

transmediale 09: festival for art and digital culture
With the festival theme DEEP NORTH, transmediale.09 looks beyond
these catastrophic scenarios to the changes that are required
in global culture. The festival looks to explore the cultural
consequences of an issue that has come to dominate virtually
all aspects of life and society. In the context of climate change,
transmediale.09 reflects on the urgency to read global events
in fundamentally new ways, developing new cultural vocabularies
factoring the autonomous and critical nature of art into the
complexity of these equations. By converting the Haus der Kulturen
der Welt into a makeshift zone of cultural shelter, transmediale.09
sets off on its journey into these deep states of fragility,
insecurity and temporality.
International Advisory Board for Programmes 2008 - 2011
For a period of four years, a committee comprising ten personalities
from the international art and culture scene will be advising
the Haus der Kulturen der Welt on questions of content and strategic
orientation. The committee includes: Prof. Ulrich Beck (Munich/London),

VISIT PICTOPIA - DIE AUSSTELLUNG
"Die Berliner Gruppe Raumlabor hat mit ihrer Ausstellungsarchitektur
einen spektakulären Erlebnisparcours geschaffen. Die Ausstellung
weckt die Lust, den Werken im Spiel zu begegnen. Haben Bilder
ein Eigenleben? Haben sie ein Begehren? Pictopia steht
für die Utopie, in Bildern zu einer universalen, globalen
Sprache zu finden" schreibt der Tagesspiegel zur neuen Ausstellung
im Haus der Kulturen der Welt. Mittwochs bis Montags ist Pictopia
zu erleben, sonntags führen Künstler, Wissenschaftler,
Kuratoren und Grafiker in die geheimnisvolle Welt des Character
Designs ein. Am 29.3. gibt der Künstler Michael Fink Einblick
in die Ausstellung.

LERNEN UND ERLEBEN: ZEICHENSTUDIO
Junge Pictopia-Besucher können an zwei Sonntagen
im offenen Zeichenstudio Tricks und Kniffs lernen; am
29.3. mit dem Berliner Künstler Michael Fink. Übrigens
macht Pictopia Schule: Letzte Woche stürmten die Zeichner
und Charakter-Designer Akinori Oishi, Stefano Pedrini, Shoboshobo
und Julia Schonlau alias Juju zahlreiche Schulhöfe in Berlin
zu einer spontanen Zeichenaktion. Über 500 Schüler
und Lehrer produzierten in nur 25 Minuten hunderte von Characters,
die nun wechselnd im Zeichenstudio gezeigt werden. An

FÊTE DE LA FRANCOPHONIE
Über 150 Millionen Menschen sprechen weltweit Französisch.
Viele Länder feiern seit 1998 jährlich die Fête
de la Francophonie. Auf dem Berliner Fest wird der
Luxemburger Julien Arpetti mit seiner Band von alltäglichen
Begebenheiten erzählen - zugleich eine Hommage an die französischen
Chansons. Auch auf dem Programm: BaliMurphy aus Brüssel
und Afroklang/Farafinbaara. Als Geschenk dann kulinarische Köstlichkeiten
aus allen Ländern der Welt, in denen auch Französisch
gesprochen wird. Präsentiert von der Delegation der Deutschsprachigen
Gemeinschaft, der Französischen Gemeinschaft und der Wallonischen
Region, den Botschaften der Republik Mali und des Großherzogtums
Luxemburg in Kooperation mit dem Haus der Kulturen der Welt.

CHANGE UTOPIA! ART AND POLITICS IN A TRANSNATIONAL WORLD
The philosopher Gianni Vattimo, Boyen Manchev from the Collège
International de Philosophie, performance theoretician André
Lepecki (NYU), T J Demos (art critic, UCL), Oscar Guardiola Rivera
(philosopher and political activist, University of London) and
MEP Gabi Zimmer will be discussing the political potential of
art, as well as its function and relationship to transnational
conflicts and globalization at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt.

forums being staged in London, Barcelona, Warsaw, Bologna, Paris

VISIT PICTOPIA - THE EXHIBITION
"With its exhibition architecture, the Berlin group Raumlabor
has created a spectacular character walk. The exhibition awakens
a desire to encounter the works playfully. Do images have a life
of their own? Do they have desires?" According to the Tagesspiegel,
Pictopia, the new exhibition at the Haus der Kulturen
der Welt, stands for the utopia of "finding a path towards
a univeral, global language in images". Pictopia
can be seen from Wednesdays to Mondays. Every Sunday, artists,
scientists, curators and graphic designers will be introducing
visitors to the secret world of character design. On March 29,
the artist Michael Fink will be presenting the exhibition.

LEARNING AND EXPERIENCING: DESIGN STUDIO
On two Sundays, the young people visiting Pictopia can
learn the tricks of the trade in a public Design Studio.
On March, 29, they will be in the competent hands of Berlin artist
Michael Fink. Incidentally, Pictopia is setting a precedent:
last week, the draftsmen, draftswomen and character designers
Akinori Oishi, Stefano Pedrini, Shoboshobo and Julia Schonlau
(alias Juju), surprised kids in countless schoolyards in Berlin
with their spontaneous design action. More than 500 pupils and
teachers produced hundreds of characters, which are now being
shown in rotation at the Design Studio. Every Sunday

FÊTE DE LA FRANCOPHONIE
Over 150 million people around the world speak French. Since
1998, many countries across the globe have been celebrating the
Fête de la Francophonie. At the Berlin festival,
Luxembourg musician Julien Arpetti and his band will be singing
about everyday situations - in part as a homage to French chansons.
The program also includes Bali Murphy from Brussels and Afroklang/Farafinbaara.
As a special treat there will be culinary delights from every
country in the world where French is spoken. Presented by the
delegation of the Deutschsprachige Gemeinschaft, the Französische
Gemeinschaft and the Wallonische Region, as well as the Embassies
of the Republic of Mali and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in

GOB SQUAD: A PICTOPIAN NIGHT SHOT
Extra für Pictopia entwickelt Gob Squad eine neue
Mission. Eine Gruppe von Akteuren bricht auf in die Straßen
der Stadt, die zum Film-Set für magische Abenteuer mit synchronisierten
Kameras wird. Die Mission: Krieg der Anonymität, Treffen
mit fremden Ko-Stars, die Welt verändern! Die Helden kehren
zurück zum Basis-Camp, in die Pictopia World, rechtzeitig
zum Beginn des eben entstandenen Multi-Screen-Film-Ereignisses.

Musikexperten vergleichen sie mit Janis Joplin: die Sängerin,

Wie weit kann man Intimität hochpegeln? Wohin schwappt der

GOB SQUAD: A PICTOPIAN NIGHT SHOT
Gob Squad came up with a new mission especially for Pictopia:
A group of adventurers sets off through the streets of the city,
which turns into a film set for magical adventures with synchronised
cameras. The mission: war on anonymity, meetings with unfamiliar
co-stars, changing the world! The heroes return to base camp,
to the Pictopia World, ready for the start of the multi-screen-film

PLANNINGTOROCK AND THE CHOIR
Music experts compare her with Janis Joplin: the singer, Planningtorock
herself, will be performing songs from her album Have it all;
the Choir of World Cultures thwarts the show that combines music,
