November, 19 Uhr

In the 1960s California was the centre of the counterculture and the Mecca of the hippie movement. Grappling with questions of how to define the artwork gave rise to new forms of expression such as performances, happenings and video art. A focus on the conceptual, process-based and ephemeral aspects of art took the place of "retinal" art forms such as painting and sculpture. Studies of phenomenological matters such as space, light and sounds, explorations of identity and gender politics, along with the relationship between artwork and viewer became dominant themes in art.
The Californian art scene played a significant part in ensuring that the neo-avant-garde gained ground. However, nowadays relatively little attention is paid to the major developments in Californian conceptual art - with the exception of a few central artists such as Bruce Nauman, Garry Hill and Bill Viola. The exhibition project Conceptual Art From California turns its gaze on this scene and presents work from the n.b.k. Video Forum's collection along with selected works from other sources. One of the core elements in this presentation is the video programme curated by Constance Lewallen for the exhibition Facing Eden: 100 Years of Bay Area Landscape at M.H. de Young Museum, San Francisco, 1995. This brings together numerous artists examining topics such as ecology and human alienation from nature, along with socio-political issues such as migration and security policy. The exhibition is complemented by a series of works by non-Californian artists, which either relate to specific pieces by artists such as Bruce Nauman or Chris Burden, or reference the Californian situation in general.

Artist/Politician: A California Statewide Artists Collaboration, 1978
Vortrag von Lowell Darling (Künstler) in englischer Sprache"I didn't like the idea that I wasn't an artist because I hadn't sold anything," says Darling, who set out to prove the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) wrong: He'd make an art of ideas that wasn't for sale.

A lecture by Lowell Darling (artist) in English language
"I didn't like the idea that I wasn't an artist because I hadn't sold anything," says Darling, who set out to prove the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) wrong: He'd make an art of ideas that wasn't for sale.
"Artist / Politician" an collaborative art project of the year 1978 will be introduced. As a political campaign the project that operated statewide in California was questioning the official definition of the "artist" by the IRS, which played a dominant part to answer this question.
Lowell Darling is known for his outlandish acts as a comic conceptualist operating in the public sphere.

Opening: Friday, December 12, 7 pm 7 pm10 pm Performance "Uncomfortable Heritage"
Anetta Mona Chis¸a (Prague) and Lucia Tkácová (Bratislava) have been working together since 2000, while at the same time pursuing individual careers. In their shared work, they explore gender relations as well as the role of eastern European artists in a western-dominated art world. With videos, installations, textual work, and performances, they refract consumer expectations and trigger processes of reflection about gender questions, the art market, and making art. The exhibition and publication are conceived as an overview of their work. The following publication is their first comprehensive monograph.
The post-communist world with its numerous refractions and discontinuities marks out the thematic framework of their work. The gaze of the artist is thus directed less at the repressed past and the devastations of eastern European biographies as at the concrete experiential world of individuals being subjected to the so-called process of transformation to capitalism. They ask what experiential spaces remain in the current state of affairs. Chis¸a's and Tkácová's work has not been the expression of a search for identity, as can often be seen in the work of artists of the older generation of eastern Europeans; instead, their artistic interest lies in making transformation visible and the new formation of the New Europe.
The preferred medium of the two artists is video, because it can quickly be used in a DIY technique and because, at least in Eastern Europe, it usually was appropriated by male artists. A twofold self-empowerment: the artists take the freedom to transgress the past as well as to choose an artistic medium that they in a sense tear from the male domain. Without explicitly picking up on feminist positions in the historical neo-avant-garde, a few of their works are founded in gender politics. Self-empowerment in their own Eastern European context is opposed by exclusion in the Western European context. Then as now, background and gender still control artistic success on the art market.
