"Lieber Maler, male mir..."

Radikaler Realismus nach Picabia

"Lieber Maler, male mir ..." zeigt, wie sich realistische Malerei heute gibt: provokant, kritisch, ironisch und emotional. Seit Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts wird die Gültigkeit realistischer Darstellungsweisen von den Verfechtern der abstrakt-konzeptuell gefärbten Moderne als politisch und ästhetisch reaktionär abgelehnt. Bis heute jedoch gibt es kontinuierlich künstlerische Positionen, die diese Maxime widerlegen. Am Beginn der Ausstellung stehen die in den 40er Jahren nach Zeitungsvorlagen gemalten Aktbilder von Francis Picabia. "Lieber Maler, male
mir ..." präsentiert in dessen Nachfolge 17 internationale Künstler, die sich aus einer meist konzeptuellen, medial gefilterten Haltung an "Figuratives" wagen. Die lockere Genealogie der realistischen Malerei der Nachkriegszeit reicht über Bernard Buffet, Alex Katz, Sigmar Polke und Martin Kippenberger bis zur aktuellen New Yorker Szene mit John Currin, Elizabeth Peyton, Kurt Kauper sowie Arbeiten von Luc Tuymans oder Neo Rauch.
In Kooperation mit dem Centre Pompidou Paris und der Kunsthalle Wien. Kuratoren: Sabine Folie (Kunsthalle Wien), Alison M. Gingeras (Centre Pompidou), BlaÏenka Perica (Schirn).

"Dear Painter, Paint Me " shows how today's realistic painting presents itself: provocative, critical, ironic, and emotive. Since the early 20th century, the advocates of an abstract, conceptual modernity have contested the validity of realistic modes of representation as politically and aesthetically reactionary. Yet, there have always been artists defying this maxim. The exhibition opens with the erotically charged nudes Francis Picabia painted after pictures in newspapers in the 1940s. "Dear Painter, Paint Me " presents 17 international artists who, working in his wake, have ventured to explore the "figurative" from a mostly conceptual, media-filtered point of view. The loose genealogy of post-war realistic painting spans from Bernard Buffet, Alex Katz, Sigmar Polke, and Martin Kippenberger to the present New York scene and artists like John Currin, Elizabeth Peyton and Kurt Kauper, as well as works by such artists as Luc Tuymans or Neo Rauch.
