Die Projekte der Ausstellung, " the island and the aeroplane",
besitzen alle die Fähigkeit fast physische Gefühle
wiederzugeben. Vielleicht dadurch dass sie eine Nicht-Selbstbewusstsein
in der Öffentlichkeit portraitieren? Die Projekte haben
aber auch starke politische Untertöne. " the island
and the aeroplane""handelt von dem einzelnen
Individium in einer kollektiven Welt. In der Ausstellung geht
es nicht nur um die Frage des selbstgenügenden und
sicherheitssüchtigen Menschen versus dem offenen, kollektiven
und solidarisch denkenden Menschen. Es geht auch nicht nur um
die Frage, wie man individuell auf eine Entfremdung reagiert.
In einer sehr direkten und melancholischen Art und Weise handeln
alle Projekte dieser Ausstellung von den Wünschen und Wegen
möglicher Selbstrealisation.
Die unterschiedlichen Positionen, aus verschiedenen kulturellen
Hintergründen, finden ihren Ausdruck in verschiedenen Medien
wieder.
Claudia Reinhardt beschäftigt sich mit den Selbstmorden
von Künstlerinnen. Durch fotografische Inszenierungen, in
denen sie den letzten Moment mit sich selbst als Modell imaginiert,
untersucht sie die Energien der Selbstzerstörung, des Widerstands
oder des Protests, die als Tatbestände, all dieser Biografien,
zugrunde liegen.
Tobias Bernstrup zeigt eine andere Form von 'Wegtreten'
in eine virtuelle Welt. Mit der Videoarbeit "Polygon Lover"
spiegelt sich der Künstler zurück in die Wirklichkeit.
Als Performer und Musiker kommt Tobias Bernstrup ziemlich nahe
an sein virtuelles Alter Ego und dessen "Fetish Reality".

Camila Sposati will mit ihrem Video durch einen einfachen
Text einen Dialog mit dem Zuschauer versuchen. Durch Provokation
verführt sie in einen intimen Kontext und lässt zwischenmenschliche
Power Plays deutlich werden.
Susan Philipsz füllt den Raum mit ihrer nackten
Stimme, nicht um uns aus dem Hier und Jetzt wegzutranspotieren,
sondern unser Selbstempfinden zu verstärken und uns unserer
Umgebung bewusst zu werden. Die Songs, die sie in ihrer Arbeit
benutzt, evozieren sowohl persönliche Erinnerungen als auch
gemeinsamme kulturelle Erfahrungen.
Jesper Just zeigt eine Videoarbeit über einen
Gefühlszustand, der Sentimentalität und Dramatik ausdrückt.
Genauer gesagt ist es ein Gefühl, irgendwo zwischen Liebe
und Verzweiflung, zwischen Einsamkeit und gemeinsamen Dasein.
Die Arbeit schildert einen Menschen, der seinen Zustand der Verlorenheit
beobachtet aber trotzdem nicht entkommen kann.
Emma Hedditch thematisiert durch ihre Herangehensweise
Einzigartigkeit und deren Scheitern in der Universalität.Sie
bittet andere Frauen für ihre Videoarbeit typische Szenen
zu filmen, die sie dann zusammenstellt und editiert. Indviduelle
Handlungen werden somit zu universellen Handlungen; Autorenschaft
und Individualität werden hierbei hinterfragt. In der Z-
bar werden Auszüge aus Hedditchs Film- und Video-Archiv
gezeigt. Die Tradition feministischer Recherche wird hier wieder
aufgenommen und ausschließlich Videos von Künstlerinnen
gezeigt.

Morten Schelde:
I am in my apartment trying to write a text on my work. In
the background, the first Star Trek movie is running. A little
while ago, I was watching CNN's preparations for the upcoming
september 11. Outside my open window was just a minute ago the
sounds of a weddingparty going on at the church across the street,
playing the wedding march and some songs of Nena and Joe Cocker.
These clashes of different realities is very much what my
work is about. I like working with a diversity of pictures, collecting
and combining them. I am interested in the psychological and
emotional impact they have on me, and in the way pictures are
dealt with in the media and in art. How do we encounter them
as individuals?
In general, I am interested in producing images reflecting an
individual voice, while trying to find underlying structures
of what ties us together in communities and larger groups.
Specifically, I have chosen drawing as my primary medium.
I started working with drawings because I like the slowliness
and simplicity of the process, and chose to work mostly monochromatic
after having tried out doing fullcolour drawings...which turned
out to look like the work of 10 kindergarden-kids. Working in
just one colour is to me about emphasising the drawing as surface,
and it gives me the possibility to work with shifts of ambiences
between the individual drawings. Like the differences between
CNN, Nena and Joe Cocker.

Bei den hier vorgestellten Arbeiten handelt es sich zumeist
um ortspezifische Interventionen, in denen die Funktionsweisen
sozialer, ökonomischer kultureller Strukturen hinterfragt
werden. Dabei werden bestehende Mechanismen oder Objekte durch
kleine Eingriffe isoliert, konzentriert oder simuliert und erhalten
so eine von der herkömmlichen Anwendung abgehobene Bedeutungsebene,
die seine Funktion zugleich auflöst und bestätigt.
Wolf von Kries lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.
Most of the presented works are site-specific interventions
that question in one way or the other the functioning of our
social, economical or cultural structures. They consist of little
manipulations of existing mechanisms or objects, which are either
isolated, concentrated or simulated thus adding a meaning beyond
its original function, which it affirms and dissolves at the
same time.

abilities. On September 18, the Swedish artists/DJs Allen Grubesic
& Karl Tuikkanen will transform the entrance hall of the
Künstlerhaus Bethanien into a sports arena for all to watch
or take part in. Sport.01, a new sport consisting of a specially
developed set of rules, will challenge the constantly increasing
time we spend in offices through playing and winning. For your
pleasure the artists will turn it all into entertainment.

All the projects in the exhibition, "The Island and the
Aeroplane" articulate almost physical emotions, portraying
an un-self-consciousness in public. It also has strong political
undertones. The exhibition opens the discussion about a collectiveness
(and solidarity) with one's close surroundings compared to a
self-contained, security-seeking personal economy. It not only
talks about the basics of personal reactions towards alienation
(even within one´s 'own culture'), but also deals with
the possibilities of living in one's surroundings, irrespective
of geographical placement. The very condition for lived life
in its diversity of personal wishes and needs for self-realization
are being discussed.
The various positions that are emerging in different cultural
spheres all over the world are reflected in a variety of media
by the artists.
Claudia Reinhardt stages the suicide of female artists,
using herself as a model. Women who after their death became
feminist icons. They do not describe the typical victimized woman.
Their decision expresses a strong will and a protest. It expresses
also the pain of hopelessness and break down of communication.
Tobias Bernstrup is dealing with another possibility
of escape and self-realization: the virtual world. The video
"Polygon Lover", an animated alter ego of the artist,
reflects and influences reality. Audiences familiar with Bernstrup's
music, performances and video installations will see that digital
existence encourages the artist to move further into a fetish-type

Even a simple text dialogue can seduce and provoke. In an
intimate context the audience is subjected to a power play, a
2 minute video sequence repeated over and over again. The Brazilian
artist, Camila Sposati will be showing the video "Attempt".
The naked voice of Susan Philipsz fills up the room,
not to captivate and lift us out of the here and now, but to
heighten our own sense of self and the awareness of the place
we are in. The songs trigger our private memories but they are
also our shared experience.
Jesper Just's video is about the sentimentality of
life; half love, half despair. Loneliness and a sense of togetherness,
experienced simultaneously. The video shows a situation of self-absorption;
a purely dramatic sentimentality one can sense and be aware of,
but not escape.
The English video artist Emma Hedditch focuses on the
politics of working together, "I do know what I am going
to do today" consists of constructed found footage requested
by Hedditch from volunteers, re-edited to form new narratives.
Questioned is the uniqueness or familiarity of filmed scenes
and matters of authorship - and friendship. Videos from "and
i will do", a video distribution network for independent
women video makers in Europe, will be shown in Berlin at Z-bar
