Douglas Gordon

The VANITY of Allegory

Der schottische Künstler Douglas Gordon (*1966) ist ein passionierter Geschichtenerzähler. Mit der eigens für das Deutsche Guggenheim konzipierten Ausstellung beleuchtet er das verschleierte Selbstporträt als kunsthistorischen Topos, literarischen Kunstgriff und filmische Strategie. Seine visuelle Collage untersucht anhand von Quellenmaterial aus Film, Fotografie, Skulptur und Installation die Schnittstelle zwischen vanitas als Reflektion über die Vergänglichkeit des Lebens und Selbstdarstellung als Akt der Eitelkeit oder Streben nach Unsterblichkeit. Neben eigenen Werken präsentiert Douglas Gordon über 30 Arbeiten von Künstlerkollegen, darunter auch Jeff Koons, Robert Mapplethorpe und Lawrence Weiner, denen bereits eine Einzelpräsentation im Deutschen Guggenheim gewidmet war. Ergänzt wird diese Auswahl durch ein von Gordon kuratiertes, umfangreiches Filmprogramm mit Beiträgen u.a. von Lindsay Anderson, Francis Ford Coppola, Walt Disney, Federico Fellini, Stanley Kubrick, Albert Lewin, Pier Paolo Pasolini und King Vidor.

From July 16 until October 9, 2005 the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin presents Douglas Gordon's The VANITY of Allegory

The Scottish artist Douglas Gordon (*1966) is an inveterate storyteller. With this exhibition conceived specifically for the Deutsche Guggenheim, he illuminates the veiled self-portrait as an art-historical trope, a literary device and a cinematic strategy. His visual collage utilizes source material from film, photography, sculpture and installation to investigate the intersection of vanitas as a meditation on the ephemeral nature of life itself and self-representation as an act of vanity or a ploy to remain immortal. Alongside his own works, Douglas Gordon presents more than thirty works from artistic colleagues, including Jeff Koons, Robert Maplethorpe and Lawrence Weiner, for each of whom a solo exhibition has already been presented in the Deutsche Guggenheim. This selection is complemented by an extensive film program which Gordon has curated and which includes works by, among others, Lindsay Anderson, Francis Ford Coppola, Walt Disney, Federico Fellini, Stanley Kubrick, Albert Lewin, Pier Paolo Pasolini and King Vidor.

Sondervorführung der Filme #Scorpio Rising# (1963, 29 min.) und #Puce Moment# (1949, 6:30 min.) von Kenneth Anger, dem Pionier des amerikanischen Underground-Films, mit Einführung und Vortrag von Francis McKee, freier Kurator und Autor des Ausstellungskataloges. McKee beleuchtet die Entstehung der beiden Filme und ihre Stellung in Kenneth Angers Gesamtwerk sowie ihre Bedeutung im Kontext der aktuellen Ausstellung #Douglas Gordon's The VANITY of Allegory#. In englischer Sprache.

Lucifer and the Honeybee

Special screening of the films #Scorpio Rising# (1963, 29 min.) and #Puce Moment# (1949, 6:30 min.) by pioneer underground filmmaker Kenneth Anger, accompanied by a talk by Francis McKee, an independent curator and contributor to the exhibition catalogue. McKee examines the genesis of the two films within Anger's oeuvre and introduces a broader interpretation of the current exhibition #Douglas Gordon's The VANITY of Allegory#.
