IN TRANSIT - das neue Performance Ereignis in Berlin
IN TRANSIT will die Perspektive kultureller Wahrnehmung in Europa neu verhandeln und alternative Modelle vorschlagen. Das alte eurozentristische Modell hat längst ausgedient. Heute gelten kulturelle Differenz und Vielfalt als entscheidendes Potenzial für die Zukunftsentwicklung von Kultur. Die Grenzen zwischen geografischen Ursprüngen, Geschlechtern und Biografien haben sich verschoben. Ein unaufhaltsamer Transformationsprozess bestimmt die globalisierten Gesellschaften weltweit. Der Singular einmal erworbener kultureller Zugehoerigkeit ist dem Plural verschiedener kultureller Räume gewichen.
Wie wollen wir mit Menschen aus verschiedensten Kulturen zusammenleben? Sehen wir unsere Zukunft in einer national gepraegten Kultur oder in einer Begegnung zwischen den Kulturen, die die Herausforderung internationalen Wandels annimmt? Was bedeutet es in der Praxis, sich diesen Herausforderungen zu stellen?
IN TRANSIT will der Suche nach neün Orientierungen in Kunst und Kultur des 21. Jahrhundert eine gemeinsame Plattform geben, ein Experimentierfeld, auf dem Künstler und Zuschaür jeweils Akteure und Beobachter zugleich sein koennen. Im Idealfall ist das Festival auch Forum für eine neü einfühlsame Globalisierung - ausgedrückt im konkreten künstlerischen und kulturellen Austausch vor Ort in Berlin.
Ausschliesslich Kuratoren, die selbst Künstler sind, aus Asien,
Afrika, Lateinamerika und dem Nahen Osten treiben den interkulturellen
Dialog im Rahmen von IN TRANSIT voran. Ihre spezifische Lebenssituation,
ihre damit verbundene kulturelle Perspektive und mithin ihre kreative Methodologie
ist mitbestimmend für die Auswahl der jeweils teilnehmenden Künstler.
Erster Kurator des alljaehrlich in Berlin stattfindenden Festivals ist
Ong Keng Sen, Direktor von 'TheatreWorks' in Singapur. Er wurde in Deutschland
vor allem durch seine Inszenierung von 'King Lear' bekannt, die beim Berliner
Festival 'Theater der Welt' 1999 gezeigt wurde. Um Kontinuitaet zu gewaehrleisten,
kuratiert Ong Keng Sen IN TRANSIT auch im Jahr 2003. Sein Partner im Berliner
Haus der Kulturen der Welt ist der Künstlerische Leiter des Programmbereichs
Musik, Tanz, Theater, Johannes Odenthal.
IN TRANSIT ist kein rein deutsches Projekt mehr, sondern ein dialogisches Projekt zwischen den Kulturräumen. Damit geht das Haus der Kulturen der Welt den mit ko-kuratierten Projekten wie 'Translated Acts' und 'Short Century' im Jahr 2001 begonnenen Weg weiter, in dem es die kuratorische Federführung weitgehend aus der Hand gibt.
Zentraler Fokus ist das Aufeinandertreffen von Künstlern aus verschiedenen kulturellen Kontexten mit extrem unterschiedlichen Biografien, die aus urbanen oder ritüllen, randstaendigen oder politisch zugespitzten Lebensverhältnissen heraus agieren. In Vorträgen, Gesprächen, Workshops und Performances loten sie gemeinsam eine neue zeitgenössische künstlerische Formensprache zwischen Tradition und zeitgenössischer Kunst aus.
Die Meister der holistischen indonesischen Kampfkunst 'Gumarang Sakti' begegnen der Tanz-Company Rary aus Madagaskar. 'BuBu, Akira and Friends', Sexworkers und Drag-Qüens aus Kyoto, treffen einzelne Mitglieder und Stammesälteste des Karaja-Stammes aus Brasilien, die den Dialog über ihre spezielle Weltsicht mit städtischem Publikum suchen. Die jüdische Südafrikanerin Yael Farber arbeitet mit dem für Jahre inhaftierten schwarzen Befreiungskämpfer Duma Kumalo zusammen. Die Berliner Tanzkompagnie Rubato begegnet der transsexuellen chinesischen Tänzerin Jin Xing.
Vor dem Hintergrund des Genozid-Prozesses gegen Milosovic vor dem Internationalen Gerichtshof in Den Haag sprechen kambodschanische Künstler von ihrem überleben während der Pol Pot-Jahre in Phnom Penh, als über eine Millionen Menschen dem 'Reinigungsversuch' der kambodschanischen Gesellschaft zum Opfer fielen. Die Videoperformance 'Three Posters' von Elias Khoury und Rabih Mroü aus Beirut behandelt den Niedergang der säkularen Linken im Libanon sowie die Hintergründe für Märthyrertum und Selbstmordattentate.
IN TRANSIT will die Wahrnehmung kultureller Differenzen und moeglicher Gemeinsamkeiten in der Auseinandersetzung mit Begriffen wie 'Tradition', 'Moderne', der oder das 'Andere' schaerfen. Die in Berlin immer noch weitverbreitete Wahrnehmungsweise künstlerischer Hervorbringungen aus anderen Kulturen als 'exotisch' soll in den prozessorientierten interkulturellen Begegnungen aufgebrochen werden. Im Idealfall entsteht so ein 'Laboratorium für Lebensentwürfe', dessen Spirit und Perspektive weit über die Performing Arts hinausgeht.
IN TRANSIT praesentiert kein fertiges Produkt mit endgültigen Antworten, sondern stellt Fragen: Was kann Kunst im 21. Jahrhundert sein? Was trennt Kunst von Politik? Welche Formen müssen dafür entwickelt werden? Kann eine absolut zeitgenössische Kunstsprache nur dann entstehen, wenn konkrete Lebenserfahrungen, politische, soziale, spiritülle und rituelle Kontexte in Kulturkontexte einbezogen werden? Wo stösst dieses Konzept an seine Grenzen?
Das Publikum wird zum Augen- und Ohrenzeugen dieser kreativen Prozesse. Es nimmt teil an der Eroberung neuer Raeume, an Laboratorien und Workshops, an Club-Events und Strassen-Performances. Gleichzeitig hat es die Möglichkeit, in eher 'konventionellen' Abendveranstaltungen fertige Produktionen zu sehen.
Dennoch ist IN TRANSIT auch die Infragestellung der klassischen Form internationaler Festivals. Statt Produkt-Präsentation stehen das aus dem interkulturellen Dialog heraus entstandene Work in Progress und die langfristige Kulturen-übergreifende Kommuniktion und Zusammenarbeit im Vordergrund.

Die Produktionen - 54 Performances mit 150 Künstlern aus Afrika, Asien, Lateinamerika, Europa und dem arabischen Raum, jeden abend von 20 Uhr bis in die frühen Morgenstunden;
Die Gesprächsreihe 'Politics of Translation' - Intellektuelle, Kuratoren und Künstler reflektieren die zentralen Themen von INTRANSIT, ab 01.06. jeden abend um 18.30 (ausser Montags und Dienstags);
Den Club - den das WMF während des Festivals im Haus der Kulturen betreibt, geöffnet ab 18 Uhr, mit Programm ab 22 Uhr.

IN TRANSIT - the new Performance Event in Berlin
IN TRANSIT seeks to negotiate the existing cultural perception in Europe, proposing alternative models. Today cultural divergence and diversity are considered the key potential for the future development of the arts. Clear-cut geographical, gender, and biographical boundaries have already shifted. An ineluctable process of transformation is shaping globalised societies worldwide. The singular once-and-for-all membership of a given culture has given way to a plurality of cultural spaces in which individuals can readily move.
How do we want to live together with people from other cultures? Do
we see our future in a nationally determined culture or in the encounter
with cultures that embrace the challenge of international change? What
does accepting this challenge mean in practice?
In the search for new orientations in the arts and culture of the 21st
century, IN TRANSIT wants to provide a common platform, an experimental
arena where artists and spectators can be both actors and spectators.
Ideally, the festival will also be a forum for a new, sensitive globalisation-expressed
in concrete artistic and cultural exchanges in Berlin.
Intercultural dialogü in the context of IN TRANSIT will be in the hands of curators-artists from Asia, Africa, Latin American and the Near East. Their specific situations in life, their concomitant cultural perspectives and hence their creative methodologies guide the choice of participating artists.
The first curator of the annual festival in Berlin is Ong Keng Sen, director of "TheatreWorks" in Singapore. He is known in Germany primarily from his production of "King Lear" performed at the Berlin "Theater der Welt" festival in 1999. To ensure continuity, Ong Keng Sen will also be in charge of IN TRANSIT in 2003. His partner at the Berlin House of World Cultures is the artistic director of the Programme Department Music, Dance, Theatre, Johannes Odenthal.
IN TRANSIT is no longer a purely German enterprise but a dialogistic project between two cultural spaces. After cooperative projects like "Translated Acts" and "Short Century" in 2001, the House of World Cultures is thus for the first time breaking completely new ground by largely relinquishing curatorial responsibility.
The chief focus is on the encounter of artists from different cultural
contexts and with extremely divergent biographies, with backgrounds in
urban or ritual, marginal or politically drastic conditions. In lectures,
discussions, workshops, and performances they will be searching together
for new forms of artistic expression between tradition and contemporary
art.
The masters of holistic Indonesian martial art "Gumarang Sakti"
will encounter the Rary dance company from Madagascar. 'BuBu, Akira and
Friens', sex workers from Kyoto will meet individuals and elders from the
Karaja tribe in Brazil, who seek to dialogü with urban audiences about
their specific world view.
The Jewish South African Yael Farber will be working with the black
freedom fighter Duma Kumalo, who suffered decades of imprisonment. The
Berlin dance company Rubato will be encountering the transsexual Chinese
dancer Jin Xin.
With the backdrop of Milosevic genocide trials in Hagü, Cambodian
artists talk about their survival during the Pol Pot years in Phnom Penh
where over one million people were killed in an attempt to purify Cambodian
society. In the same way, "Three Posters" from Beirut about the
destruction of the secular left in Lebanon is juxtaposed against the backdrop
of suicide bombing in Palestine today.
IN TRANSIT seeks to sharpen the perception of cultural differences and possible commonalities in addressing concepts like "tradition", "modern age", the "other". The still widespread attitude towards works of art from other cultures as being "exotic" is to be exploded.
Ideally, a "laboratory for life" will come into being whose spirit and horizon transcend the performing arts. IN TRANSIT does not present a finished product with final answers but asks qüstions: What can art be in the 21st century? What is the divide between art and politics.? What forms need to be developed? Can an absolutely contemporary artistic language emerge only if concrete experience of life, political, social, spiritual, and ritual contexts are included in cultural contexts? Where are the limits to this concept?
The public will be witness to this creative process. They can participate
in the conqüst of new spaces, in laboratories and workshops, in club
events and street performances. At the same time, they will be able to
attend conventional evening events, finished productions. Nevertheless,
IN TRANSIT also calls in qüstion the classical form of intern
ational festivals. Instead of product presentation, the focus is on work
in progress generated by intercultural dialogü, and on long-term communication
and cooperation between cultures.
